Cirque du Soleil

Seeing as I hate any circus that has animals I have only a few options, chinese circus or Cirque du Soleil....

I've only seen one of their live shows, Alegria, and it was absolutley amazing. They manage to pull you into their world in such a magical way that you often forget that you're in an actual tent. Instead, as an audience member, you become a part of their world.

So who has seen anything by Cirque du Soleil, what was it and what was your impression of it?

cheers

Re: Cirque du Soleil

Are the Cirque du Soleil the ones that appear a lot on television? If so, they seem very professional, and a very different style to the traditional circuses, I like that.

Re: Cirque du Soleil

Everytime I try to watch them on TV, they scare me away. Actually, I saw one yesterday, with these two people doing these really freaky things on acrobat. The whole feel of the show is just a little too weird for me, though.

Re: Cirque du Soleil

They had an IMAX film that was quite cool.

I am also fond of the real circus.

how the hell is it weird? it's utterly amazing, and they don't just do weird freaky shit that isn't physically possible but all their shows have a meaning.. here check out www.cirquedusoleil.com
they're costumes and characters and themes are spell binding....

I hate when people say stuff like it has meaning. Or art is supposed to be deep. Why can't they be doing weird shit and let it be art on its own.

Frankly, I don't wanna know the meaning.

Re: Cirque du Soleil

I'm glad you said that, NNJ, otherwise Dyders might have thought I was having a go. Not that you are having one or anything, but I too hate when "meaning" is bandied about as an attractor to a subject or event.

Of course, I may just be too ignorant of most meanings to feel clever enough to know what they are, but often "meaning" is used to exclude the general population and for the unexcluded to enjoy an in-crowd joke at their expense. Tracy Emin springs to mind; "Unmade Bed" indeed.

"But Father, the Emperor is not wearing ANY clothes!"

Re: Cirque du Soleil

ok, maybe meaning was the wrong word to use.... perhaps a theme is the better term.... Like Alegria was about the split and battle between old and young, the old order and new order. Each of the acts were also characters. The old ( i forget what they're called now) were the courtiers of the palace of Versailles and were bound to the old orders. The angels were the young ones and were bringing new light and new life to the world, trying to bring down the old order... So the people doing the trampoline stuff were the angels, therefore not only are they doing acrobatics but they're also telling a story.
Similar thing in Quidam... Quidam is no one yet he's everyone. He's the faceless stranger you meet in the street. So the story is that of a little lonely girl and her Quidam...
My point is that I like it because it's theatre and circus rolled into one...

cheers
