The old "They just got worse after Cliff died!" makes about as much sense to me as saying "Pink Floyd just got worse after Syd went crazy!"
Cliff, who had little impact on the lyric/music writing in general, would have prevented the band from growing and expanding their horizons over the course of a 20 year rock career? I'd be very, very disappointed with a band who had the exact same sound on their 6th album as on their 2nd.

Sounds kind of hypocritical, after I've bashed them for this St. Anger sound. But just because I think all bands should change their sound and grow doesn't mean I like the direction they're growing in

Maybe your mom shouldn't. Btw, I heard a Metalica song today, it was not very pleasing.

everybody knows 'tallica sold out, bob rock is in control now.

i hate the new album, i can respect the fact that bob rock is an artist and is doing summin he wants to do, but its an insult that it has to be under the name 'metallica' (legends that they are, wether u like them or not)...... and its annoying to hear lars etc pretending they know what they are doing, they dont, all u have to do is looka t interviews now and interviews from all other releases since the black album and u'll notice how much they contradict themselves...... which is enough evidence for me to get the idea they are just doing what bob tells them.

I dont know what to think of St. Anger. There's a part of me that's willing for chnge but another side of me that cant handle that a band the calibur of Metallica would go down this route.

Metallica is a band that is always evolving and trying new things. They don't want to repeat themselve and get bored, so they tried something new.

I have not heard this album, but from what I hear, it's not coming off well. It sounds like Metallica tried something new and it just didn't work.

Rush is a group that is the same way. Their latest album, Vapor Trails, has no guitar solos either, and Alex Lifeson is a freaking amazing guitarist. They just wanted a new sound, and the album is very hard, raw, and in your face with an odd production.

Bands like these that keep producing don't do it for money, or ego, or to just repeat themseleves, they do it because they want to experiement and create. It worked for Rush, it doesn't sound like it worked for Metallica

I also was pretty disappointed with St. Anger. But I do agree that it was better than them having put out something that sounded just like the Black album or something, it was time for something new. They did what every artist should do, arouse controversy.

I heard St. Anger sucked bad. I know that Metallica is trying a "new direction", but they took a WRONG turn... Everything from the black album on back is good though.
