Time travel

Tonight I watched "The Time Machine" remake, based on the book by H.G. Wells. Thanks go to Byron for bringing up the title, by the way. As it were, I'm also a huge fan of the Back to the Future movies, and not to mention Donnie Darko. Even sadly, Bill and Ted was kind of cool. The underlying theme is time travel. And I was just curious what time period would you most like to see and why? And also what historical figures would you like to meet?

I'm not going to even touch this question since I would undoubtedly say the sixties for the music and such, and that's so cliche. I'd probably be in Canada anyway, dodging the draft. I also considered going to the future and seeing if the bands I think suck right now matured, if they were willing to do so at all. Then again, and more seriously, aside from musical purposes, I'd fear for my safety since the future is very unforseen and very unpredictable. As far as historical figures...everyone would say Jesus or Albert Einstein...but I'd really dig just to look Rasputin in the eye once...I think that'd be the creepiest moment of my life.

I'd like to travel everywhere. But if I only had one choice, I'd go for the 1960s or early 1970s. As I expressed somewhere, that was the time the 80% of my favourite music was created. so basically the same time that you wrote Wing'd Icarus.

I'd like to talk with a young Hitler and eventually kill him before his team starts the WW2. But changing the past is unpredictable and may be extremely insidious as we, the Back To The Future movies fans, learned.

I'd go to Ancient Greece around 400BC. Might have to learn ancient Greek properly first though...

Not that I'm a violent person or anything but I've always thought that if I went back to "Arthurian times", the era of knights and ladies, Kings and vassals, but loaded with current technology (computer, palm pilot, and weapons) and knowledge of events to come (from their perspective) I would be quickly installed as "Court Wizzard"...

Move over Merlin...

Pfft! You guys!

Thanks for bringing up one of my favorite themes, W'Icky.

My fascination with the filmic genre is in trying to detect where the paradoxes might occur. With Bill & Ted, it was chock-a-block with possibilities with their constant reminders to "go back" and arrange for something to "happen" now.

In the 70's Time After Time with Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenbergen, Malcolm plays HG Wells himself and must pursue Jack the Ripper (another of my hobbies), an unsuspected friend of HG's, to modern day San Francisco which is the site of an HG Wells exhibition; thus the transposition in time as well as space.

Not many paradoxes there but it DOES promote the idea that "Jack's" last victim may not have been whom everyone thinks she was; mistaken identity.

If I were to go back in time, it would be to 1984 - not nearly as far back as some of you - when Microsoft was floated on the stock market, and I would buy $1000 worth of MSOFT shares which would today be worth many millions, thank you.

My original plan was to visit Northern California in 1835, initially to improve my Spanish, but then to (secretly) discover gold in them thar hills. Then I figured all the digging and panning would be too much trouble AND there would have been a distinct lack of proper toilet facilities.

In ancient Greece I would be worshipped as a god. There'd be loads of statues of me in museums today and books written about my astonishing knowledge of maths, biology etc.

In fact, I'd probably have the country named after me. wohoo!

Whoa, wait! is this time travel or time/space travel??... (not that any of them are possible, there's a paradox there)

If it's only time travel, then there's not much to see here...I think it'd be incredibly boring, past or future...but if it's time/space, well, then I'd try to meet Alexander the Great (my fave megalomaniac...OK, maybe closely followed by Roger...)
Then I'd go to The Beatles' first gig, or the rooftop gig, that must've been awesome.
Then I'd visit a couple of artists, I guess (see if I can fool around with their stirred minds a bit)

Then I'd go to Disneyland, 2 years ago (last time I went), coz that was a nice time.

Fulgy's idea sounds a lot like Mark Twain, to me. Still brilliant, though.

And for all intents and purposes (or is it intensive purposes?) we'll say time as well as space travel is permitted. I had forgotten about that detail.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, yes.

Not a bad book, aside from the cold blooded mass murdering in the end. Very satirical.
