Waters' bass on DVD

Okay, I know this is most likely an irrelevant question to a lot of people, but I've been curious:

Why is it that a lot of video footage on Roger's DVDs, what is being played on the bass guitar and what Roger's fingers are doing on the fretboard DO NOT match up. I realize that Andy is playing bass for some songs but even the ones Andy plays guitar for, Roger's fretting doesn't always match up with the bass track.

Most notable examples are:

ABITW (part 1) - Live In Berlin
Brain Damage - ITF Live

Anyone have any information on these "mistakes"?

And PS: I have been playing the bass guitar myself for almost six years so I know what I am talking about with regards to Roger's bass playing.

On the ABITW1, Andy is playing bass and Roger is just standing and occasionally hitting a string.

Watch the END of ABITW part 1 during the sax solo. Andy has switched to a Fender Strat guitar and Roger is playing his P-bass with his fingers. The fingers do not match up.

I've watched it right now. I would say Roger is playing more notes that I can hear. His left hand fingers are really moving very strangely. So my guess is that it's some additional overdub. You know The Thin Ice was in fact recorded after the concert and the high sung part of Every Stranger's Eyes on ITF was a playback. Maybe the thing on BD is also some overdub.

Yeah that's what I figured. I'm glad you noticed the "Every Stranger's Eyes" thing, because I posted about that before but no one seemed to notice or care.

And also, I knew "The Thin Ice" was redone after the show, and I also knew that "Mother" was from the rehearsal done prior the show (due to the fact Sinead never stuck around after the show to rerecord her bit similarly to what Ute Lemper did with Thin Ice).

So yeah, it must be an overdub of some kind. Rog's hand on the video show him playing the standard bass line found on the album version of ABITW part 1 and also part 2. But what we actually hear on the Berlin version is quite different.

I think the answer here, now that I think about it, is that Roger knows that as long as he's singing properly, he can fix the bass parts later. Because, in all honesty, other than myself and hardcore bassists, nobody is really gonna notice if the fretting isn't proper. Most people are only watching Snowy and DiFonzo for those kind of errors.... not Roger.

It shouldn't surprise anybody to learn that Roger neither plays the bass very much or very well. He never has (according to Gilmour)...

Yeah, at least he must look like he's playing it on the shows.

Yeah, and he was miming the whole thirteen years he played onstage with Dave, too.

Look me in the eyes and tell me none of Dave's solos on PULSE were overdubbed.

I was listening to (and taping) the Live broadcast of the Berlin show, and as I recall, the reason the show stopped was the failure of the 'click track'.
During the delay, Jim Ladd (who else?) the radio announcer, explained that they had recorded the entire performance from the dress rehearsal the day before, and would use that to fill in the gaps when it was mixed.
I was unaware that any re-recording was done afterwards.

After most of the crowd had left they did an emergency re-take of the first few songs immediately after the show. Parts of that were used, parts of the rehearsal were too.

Nah...just half the time he was in the studio with Dave

But the difference here is that Dave played both the first time live and the overdubs (if it's true)

Yes, PULSE completely sucks. By the way go back and listen Animals, and "look me in the eyes" and tell me that Rogers bass playing isn't precise and well crafted.

Good call, man. Not to mention his vocals are great on Animals as well.

And also, all this BS about Gilmour playing bass on half the tracks is nonsense. Gilmour's been credited for his bass parts. On TDB, he played some. And the earlier fretless bass stuff was him too. But other than maybe a track or 2 other than those, it was all Roger. Waters' style is simple, but you can recognize it 99% of the time.

And BTW, Dave's bass playing on Barrett's solo stuff is pretty bad compared to Rog.
