Re: Tribute bands

Has anyone out there come across any GOOD Floyd tribute bands ?

I've seen the Australian Pink Floyd show several times in the UK. Excellent sound, very good likeness to Floyd. In fact, they once played at a party hosted by David Gilmour.

Re: Tribute bands

I think there's one called "Think Pink", that has actually came out with their own albums that they say sound "Floydian".

Frankly, i don't like Tribute bands, to play the songs at small community shows or in a small band that's not making alot of $$ is OK, but a tribute band is like a complete rip-off, and plus, it's just not the same.

I think most agree with me here, but if not - then go ahead and speak up.

Re: Tribute bands

Yes, I know what you're saying.

Artistically speaking I often wonder why these bands, who obviously have talent, don't write and perform their own material.

But, on the other hand...when I hear Floyd music I just gotta hear more, especially being performed live.

Re: Tribute bands

There is a band here called The Machine. In my opinion, the next best thing. They have a whole light show and everything, I think they started out just as fun and it kept growing, cause they don't really promote or anything.

Re: Tribute bands

Australian Pink Floyd are a great sounding band. Not sure if they have played in other countries but they tour the UK extensively.

Re: Tribute bands

Hate 'em!

Developed phobia to them after (v. bad) Vegas lounge band attempting "Money". Took a grave dislike to Vegas around then as well.

Floyd on!

Re: Tribute bands

I would eventually like to start one. I
already own some of equipment that Wright used in the 70's. I just need the analog synthesizers that he onced used (VCS3, ARP, MINIMOOG) They are hard to come by,
especially these days. I saw one cover band called "In The Flesh". They were so-so....6 out of 10. To layed back when it came to "Animals" or "The Wall" stuff.

Re: Tribute bands

for Wrightkeys: If you're planning to do "Atom Heart mother", you'll need a mellotron as well, and they are hard to come by as well.

Re: Tribute bands

Wrightkeys, you obviously admire Richard Wright's work in the band. Would any tribute band you set up put more focus and importance to the keyboard parts or would you try and "sound like the record" ?

Re: Tribute bands

I have what could be best called a Floyd tribute band (I play rhythm guitar and do vocals...the other guys say my voice is a dead ringer for Roger's operatic wail  )

We play covers only, about 60-70% Floyd, but only because we HAVE no material. We're just starting out, we've written a total of one (count 'em, ONE) song. Our writing process is, to say the least, brutal  .

Just FTR, the first song we ever played live was "Time." Ooh...still sends shivers up my spine, just remembering the feeling I got standing up there in front of all 12 or 13 attendees.

Re: Tribute bands

What do you mean Charade, "Don't mind Radiochair"? Do I not deserve to be minded on this forum? I think the power of being a moderator has gone to your head.
