Re: Question on " High Hopes"

Considering it is the best single song Floyd produced post Animals, I do.

Re: Question on " High Hopes"

Yup. it's about the innocence and optimism of the past
It really harks back to the old days in Cambridge.
The river Cam, where dave used to swim
the 'Cut' was a path that leads from the road to Granchester Meadows, a meeting point for the cambridge potheads.

Re: Question on " High Hopes"

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps running before time took our dreams away.

After Syd's breakdown the band carried on with him until he became unworkable within the bands structure and they had to get rid.

The next line is obviously about how the media treated Floyd from then on after the "magic" went.

Maybe. Thats the beauty about Floyd Even if Gilmour tells you what the words mean, you still don't believe it. Plus you don't expect Dave to fully know either.

It's like Peter Gabriel writing sub-consciously on the 'Lamb.'

Ambiguous to all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Div bell is about communication though, in it's many forms.

Re: Question on " High Hopes"

Well I'd allways assumed the song was about pot, coming from my experiances anyway. But I can see the other point of view.

Whoopsie Whoopsie Whoopsie!!!
Forget my last post---i had my SONG titles mixed up----DIVISION BELL is about what i had previously posted--- not High Hopes, which IS indeed about Gilmour and Roger's battles. appy-polly-loggies

Well, I have to agree with our banned friend on this one. Nothing to do with marriage and kids, actually.

Re: Question on " High Hopes"

As all, I have my very own idea about High Hopes. Lyrically, it's my favorite song.

Take the bit in my signature, "Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young, in a world of magnets and miracles..."

That particular line reminds me of being a young boy back in my tiny, countryside, hometown. I would get incredible views of the sunset nearly every single evening (look at my avatar!). I remember looking at that horizon, wondering what was out there in the world that I had never seen. "Magnets and miracles" represents all the unbelievable things I was yet to see and experience--wonderful sceintific acheivements, and incredible experiences that are far too fantastic to be real.

video on High Hopes

The video of High Hopes certainly suggests reminiscing of a more pleasant time, probably when the band members were young and friends in Cambridge. I was wondering whether the meadow that is in the video is Grantchester Meadows. It has a lot of very haunting imagery, especially with the bells tolling.
