Question If you've ever travelled...

I'd like to know which were the places you enjoyed the most, and which ones, on the other hand, you disliked.
And btw, are you guys planning to go somewhere on holiday this summer or to spend every day here with Gerald, Illuvatar and Simon? (j/k)

Re: If you've ever travelled...

I shouldn't laugh at that. The sad truth is, I'm here everyday, too.

I'm spending the summer in my hometown in Pennsylvania. Back near Philly again.

The vacation I loved the most was Las Vegas. Just because there is a ton and a half of crap to do there. I was never bored. The Caribbean islands were a nice vacation, too.

I forgot to add. My absolute favorite place is the California beaches. Does not really matter where, the Pacific is just so beautiful.

Re: If you've ever travelled...

It's not like I've traveled that much but I have fond memories of Paris, wonderful city, absolutely love it. I also have a thing for Corsica and Greek islands in Summer.

No plans *yet* for next summer though.

Incidentally, I hate to fly.

Re: If you've ever travelled...

I'm going down to the west coast of Devon. So sorry to all those who were hoping to spend it here with me.

Re: If you've ever travelled...

I forgot to mention where I liked and didn't like. Actually I intentionally forgot so I could increse my post count....

Anyway, I love N.Wales been going there for years. Went to the Isle of Skye a few years back which was beautiful.
And the west country is nice as well, Salisbury Plain, Glastonbury, the Cotswolds and all that. And the Peak District.
Bad places...I don't think there have been. Yet

Re: If you've ever travelled...

I'm heading over to Illinois this summer. If Gerry wants, we could probably meet (I don't know how. Bloomington is not walking distance from Chicago. I sure could meet Maurice though )

But places I've been to, enjoyed the most anyways:

1. Munich-Bavaria (Germany). Although I spent only 2 weeks here, it was awesome.
2. St. Petersburg-Moscow (Russia). This immediately followed my Munich trip. Spent about 10 days.
4. The Himalayas, Nepal. I go there every winter for treks (past three years) and I conduct hikes in the area. Me qualified for upto 16,000 feet. Linked to such areas is a beatiful plateau in Kashmir called Ladhak and Leh. Breathtaking isn't the word. Reminded me of the Bavarian Alps.
5. God's own country: The backwaters of Kerala (a state in India), followed by Goa and Konkan, Maharashtra. The Western Ghats are some of the most picturesque in the world. Not to mention their awesome (but fast disappearing) tribal culture. [Man, they make some mean moonshine ]
6. Of all the places I've been to in the US, I found no better place than San Francisco... truly beautiful. I'd love to spend more time in Chicago. For some strange reason, I dislike Washington D.C. (except the Smithsonian institutions and the Lincoln memorial )intensely.

Dislikes....

1. I expected much out of my trip to Rajasthan (Barmer, Jaipur and the Thar desert). Useless trip. Other than visiting my cousin in the 1st Armoured Division of the Indian Army and sitting in a T-72, nothing much came out of that. God-damned beauruecrats and their f***ed up red tape.
2. I similarly dislike Delhi. Too many people with 'airs' of importance
3. Similarly hated Las Vegas and Los Angeles. I have an almost virulent hatred for Vegas. It's a disgusting place IMHO.

Re: If you've ever travelled...

Koh Samui was one of the most enjoyable places I've been to...but it was probably the company as much as the place that made it so good.

Skiing in Austria was awesome.

Ireland is "God's country" (so much so I'm considering moving there next year)

Didn't really enjoy the USA truth be told.

Bali sucked.

London is quite a cold place (humanity-wise).

And that is my spin on stuff.

Hmmm...our similarities are beginning to worry me, Simon, old fruit.

I couldn't agree more with your No. 3; have always thought Vegas should be napalmed and bulldozed, and L.A. is just a wastebin pit of iniquity and inequity.

Not that I have travelled all that extensively, but of Europe Amsterdam is far and away the favourite. It's really only a high-summer holiday spot as otherwise it's a bit chilly. I guess a tulip fields trip in Spring might be enjoyable. Rome is a very close second favourite (much enjoyment to be had) and Paris an even closer third. Paris can be magical when it's perfect and it often is.

Sydney, for me, was paradise and I often fancy upping sticks and emigrating there...TODAY! I just loved it to bits, but seeing the Pacific from the other side was a mite disturbing for this Angeleno. Singapore is a very exotic locale where it is ever-Summer and where East truly meets West. Quite a closed, repressed state though.

White Horse safari-ing in Wiltshire and surrounding counties of The Vale of the White Horse was the most interesting as a hobby holiday. Taking in Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles, barrows and other ancient sites, including the Rude man of Cerne and Long Man of Wilmington.

Seoul and Las Vegas have to be my least favourite holiday spots. I never want to go to Korea again. Ever.

Re: If you've ever travelled...

I didn't think much of Thailand, but like Driven, thought Koh Samui was pretty hospitable. Chicago, I liked a lot. Not a particularly tourist-centric place, and all the better for it. A true flavour. South o' France, well, it's beautiful, isn't it? Italy, skiing for a week, fantastic. Spain, the bloody usual. Australia, there are no words that I can find to describe what a beautiful, giving country this is. And NZ is OK, but I'd rather be back in Oz. England's full of English, although the West Country takes a lot of topping, frankly. Mmmmm, patchwork hills...

:o You an angeleno right?

I guess everyone also has a rather special place in their hearts for the village/town/city where they went through their formative years. I for one sure can NEVER forget Bombay. That place was more than just heaven...

Re: If you've ever travelled...

I absolutely loved Genoa, Italy. I was surprised how friendly the people were to a "Yank". One of my most treasured memories is sharing a bottle of vino with good company in an outdoor cafe in Ventimiglia, watching the twilight settle on the beautiful Mediterranian. I wonder if they still have all those "Cinzano" umbrellas and sunshades that seemed to be everywhere.

I also liked Monte Carlo, Nice France, Baden Baden & Garmische, Germany.

Ireland is the most beautiful country I've ever seen.

My brother went to Australia a couple of years ago to scuba dive along the Great Barrier Reef. He is so fond of OZ, he plans to move there. Maybe after he does, I'll go visit him.

What the heck is wrong with Las Vegas? I love it!
