Re: Dark Side of the Moon?

I want to know if you agree that Dark Side of the Moon was a good album, but not one of their best. Several of their albums I thought were far better, such as Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Meddle, and Division Bell. Don't get me wrong though, I think Dark Side of the Moon was an awesome album.

Re: Dark Side of the Moon?

I do agree with you; although I love The Dark Side of the Moon, I do believe it is kinda overrated, when you think of the other Pink Floyd albums. The ones you mention are good examples. I specially like the progressive rock era, including Meddle (Echoes is a masterpiece!) and Atom Heart Mother. Maybe I don't think Dark Side is their best album because it was definately a commercial hit, and we all got to hear it a little too much...

Just my 2 cents...

Re: Dark Side of the Moon?

Well, i'm gonna have to disagree with you here.

For three reasons: 1. i've thought about this before for a while and i came to this conclusion. 2. It is definatley #1 or 1.5 on my favorite list and 3. We should start having some cool floydian discussions and this is one!!

Ok guys (or gals - or guy - or gal - or whatever). I realize that it's "overated" and a "commercial hit" and "what everyone identifies floyd with - so the 'true' fan should find a deeper album". Dude, this is floyd at it's best.

It's not like the went out and said - "ok we're gonna make a smash hit" - Piper, Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle (especially) all EVOLVED into this. As DSOTM, has evolved into other floyd pieces.

Floyd (at least basically with Roger - and i'm in no way saying that the old floyd with Waters is better than the new!) came up with a theme or concept and created a whole album incorporating that along with it's older music with new twists.

Sure, some of the albums don't sound like the others - like "animals" is a bit out of place. But i especially like DSOTM, because it shows just how the Floyd's (or whatever - "the band" i guess you could say) tweeked and learned from their earlier works.

Meddle certainly sounds like some of the stuff with Barrett - though not as "outright" (like Chapter 24) - but that's just it, it toned down some points - added more keyboard and drums, and intstrumentals.

AND it displayed the concepts better than any other earlier one. The 'concepts' being that of the tribulations of life and the industry Pink Floyd is in - which is generally the topic of most of their Post Dark Side stuff.

Ohh, and the music is AWESOME. I mean, i can't help but turning "Breathe" up as loud as i can. And though there may be some repetitious boring parts ("On the Run" can get a litte annoying - and the beginning of "Time" is a little erratic)- it's all made up for.

They fully used all the instruments in this album (Great Gig in the Sky, keyboard part) and the mixing (By Alan Parsons - who has a great band - i love his music aswell) is great.

I think the main reason i think it's the most popular and long lasting album - and one of my favorites is that...when i lie down and listen to it...i don't feel the same... i feel...not dark, not good, not bad - just, well you know - I'm IN the floyd - it's like i don't know what i'm gonna do after the song ends - because i never think of it ending, and when it does i go on to the next one.

Because, "Really there is no dark side to the moon" - there's no "other ultimate" altenative - this is the Dark which penetrates all i see and lets me "BREATHE"

Thanks for listening,
and i can't wait to hear what anyone thinks of my um...rambling

Re: Dark Side of the Moon?

Well Charade I am, it's kind of difficult to reply to something like that. I guess that the liking of Dark Side of the Moon is a matter of opinion. But to me Dark Side of the Moon wasn't as, um, "Pink Floyd", as other albums. It's hard to describe what I'm trying to say, but when you listen to a Pink Floyd album, you get into the music. Become one with it. When I say it isn't as "Pink Floyd", I mean you don't get as deep into it as when you listen to other albums. When I listen to "Wish You Were Here", everything is tuned out, except for the music.
At least this my experience anyways.

Re: Dark Side of the Moon?

Don't get me wrong, I love Dark Side of the Moon dearly. It was the second Pink Floyd album I bought. The melody's are 'breathe'taking and everything about it is great. I'm just saying that other albums are just more perfect, it that is a real sentence.

Re: Dark Side of the Moon?

Ha Ha charade you are. You guys are funny. I don't know, I guess I agree with both of you, DSOTM was my favorite for a long time and then I discovered some other less common PF songs. I have 18 PF cds now and I have opened my opinions a little. I do know that Echoes is one of the best songs I have ever heard, but the same can be said about Hey You, Brain Damage/Eclipse, Dogs, High Hopes, Astronomy Domine, Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, and there are so many more, I just decided to name a few. The first Floyd cd that I really got into was Animals and that just might be my favorite if I have to pick one. I just don't think I can pick a favorite, they are all beautiful pieces of art that only a certain kind of person can understand and feel. It is all a matter of opinion, but as floydians, we all feel basically the same wierd feeling in our gut when we listen to them. It is so undescribable. My friends joke with me about it, but as far as Floyd goes, **** them they don't know and they will never understand their power.
