Does order affect how you feel about a band?

I've been thinking about something lately and I want to know what everyone else thinks. Can the order you experience a band like pink floyds albums in affect the way you think about that band? My first floyd album was the Wall, then Dark Side of the Moon, then WYWH and by then i loved them and started getting a bunch of stuff...but i wonder if things would have been different if the first floyd album i had heard was atom heart mother, or division bell. Obviously if i gave someone Atom Heart Mother as their first floyd album and someone else Dark Side of the moon they would both think entirely different about Pink Floyd. So if someone goes on and starts listening to more albums, does the order they get them in have an effect, or does it not matter?

It probably does have some effect.

My first album was Delicate Sound of Thunder, which I loved. Had my first listen been, say, Pros & Cons, I probably would have never gone further.

But Roger became an 'aquired taste'.

In the final analysis though, I probably would have ended up in the same place regardless of whatever album was first.

Thats a fair enough thought.I was somewaht different though.I first went from rave music to Division Bell because I saw the video for High Hopes on T.V.From there I bought Pulse.But,on my birthday,someone bought me Darkside(greatest gift I have ever got) and I realised there was more to Floyd,especially a man named Waters.Now,I have all Floyd Records,Waters solo's and Barrett solo's.I love Atom heart and Saucerful,yet dispise Momentary Lapse...and Delicate sound.Yet,my best friend,when I mentioned Floyd to him,bought Momentary lapse.. and Delicate Sound..and can't listen to Saucerful and Atom Heart and Piper.But he loves the Wall!You may very well have a point there,I feel it depends on how open you are to new music.

If you showed a newbie the Final Cut, Saucerful, or AHM, they'd probably just whisk them off and never explore the genius of Floyd. You've got to expose a newbie to the pivotal 4: Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. After that, they'll be aching for more! Then you can unleash the previously mentioned three upon them, most likely enjoying them more than if they heard it first. I'd say Meddle is a semi-nice entry level album, but at least listen to Dark Side, WYWH, and The Wall a bit before going anywhere else. If someone has a deep understanding of early experimental stuff, they might for for Piper or Relics, but if one is very new to classic rock, I might stay away from it for a while.

yeah my first was WYWH. I don't like the stuff where gilmour dominates, such as AMLOR, and TDB. but WYWH got me into them, if i had started with AMLOR i wouldn't have listened to them anymore

My friend was attempting to get another friend of ours into pink floyd a few years back...which i knew was hopeless anyway cause he is a musical snob. he's not open to anything...but anyway the first song he played him was Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict. I was like "what the hell are you doing! If there was any chance he would like pink floyd you've destroyed it." Sure enough, to this day, that kid refuses to listen to any pink floyd.

I heard The Wall first, then DSOTM, then Relics. I think Relics is a good comp. for anyone to purchase who is curious about early Floyd. It suited me fine.

My starting point has been The Wall. Yet, now it isn't even in my Top 5 PF albums, I dislike most of Rog's solo stuff and Rick Wright is my favourite band member. So I think order doesn't matter that much after all.

My first PF record was DSOTM. Now I love almost everything they released.

Another story: I loved Samba Pa Ti when I first heard it. I got some compilation off which I liked about 50% of the songs. Then I borrowed some Santana's album from the eighties and said to myself: ow, this sucks. Then I've seen the Woodstock performance of Soul Sacrifice and got Santana's first three albums in the next few days. Then Caravanserai, Lotus and all that obvious stuff. I don't know what would I do if I haven't seen that Woodstock video... maybe I'd be deprived of some of the best music ever created. But honestly, I'd check out Woodstock any footage just for The Who, Jimi, Joe Cocker performing With A Little Help From My Friends and more alone someday.

I was lucky. My very first album was Piper, and Syd is always a good start...

OBC was the second to last album I tried, now it is one of my faves, even above the disastrous Wall.
