I agree. You won't find another guitarist with such a wide range of styles. Have you heard his classical guitar work? It's amazing. Check out Bay of Kings if you ever get the chance.

A blast from the pasts...

I love ressurecting old threads..

Anyone remember Eric Bloom and Donald Roessler (aka Buck Dharma) from Blue Oyster Cult?

Re: Underrated/overlooked/unappreciated guitarist

Even though he wasn't mind-blowing or anything, David Byrne of the Talking Heads was a great rhythm guitarist.

And only Zoot Horn Rollo (aka Bill Harkleroad) would be able to keep up with Captain Beefheart's crazy guitar parts......

I've just rediscovered BOC after many many years. I remember seeing them at Donnington Park way back in the early '80's and I don't think I'd listened to them since. Very under-rated band imo.

Re: Underrated/overlooked/unappreciated guitarist

Roy Buchanan

I just heard some of his stuff . This guy was great. I'd heard his name before since he was a friend, mentor and major influence to Danny Gatton-- but I'd never heard his work.

Sadly, Roy apparently had a troubled life and hanged himself in 1988. He was called the "world's best unknown guitarist", a label which was then transferred to his protégé Danny Gatton, who, ironically, also ended up killing himself in 1994.

So, Fulghy, don't let anyone call you the "world's best unknown guitarist" -- even though you may be.

I'm off to track down some of Roy's work.

Re: Underrated/overlooked/unappreciated guitarist

Hey there Strat, you are spot on with Roy Buchanan! He was a very underrated guitarist, try and get a listen in particular to a couple of his tracks 'Sweet Dreams' and 'The Messiah will come again'...absolutely beautiful guitar work.

Re: Underrated/overlooked/unappreciated guitarist

Thanks for the tip, Axemeister, I'll be sure to get an album which includes those.
