Indeed, he's also very melodic. It reminds me of Gilmour at times but he doesn't mimic, he's got a style of his own.

No, Harrison was a mediocre guitar player in an overrated band.

I don't know if I've mentioned this here, but Devin Townsend is surely one of the greatest guitarists to grace our Earth. Just listen to the powerful and emotional solo in "Deep Peace".

He is the only guitarist who reminds me of Gilmour.

I dunno if this was posted elsewhere on here, but he was almost going to go on tour with RW this summer, but decided not to, since his voice wasn't quite up to the parts he'd have to sing in place of Gilmour. That would've been really cool.

I can't disagree with you more. Unless your joking or something. but George was a very gifted guitarist even if he wasn't as flashy as some of the others mentioned in this thread. To me thats like sayin' Pete Townsend is a mediocre guitar player. And as far as the Beatles being overrated. Compared to who? I guess Elvis was overrated too? even if you don't like them tell me one band that has more great songs the The Beatles?

Im with you on this one. The Beatles are my favorite band after PF, they just have so many great songs.

Re: Underrated/overlooked/unappreciated guitarist

I'd also include both Genesis guitar players, Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips.

Steve Hackett played tapping way before Eddie Van Halen did it. He can also play a dazzling variety of styles: prog, experimental, blues, Brazilian, classical... I really like his classical works, he's a really fine composer. Not only the famous "Horizons" from Genesis' "Foxtrot" he's got a lot of other classical pieces written by himself. He's also got a record where his brother plays flute and they both pay tribute to Erik Satie's compositions on classical guitar and flute. It is quite worth a listen.

Even more overlooked is poor old Anthony Phillips. He may not have so wide a variety of styles but I think that he may even be better than Steve Hackett as a classical composer/arranger. He is both an accomplished piano and guitar player and his insight on both instruments and on the structures of music really shows in his works.

Finally, I don't know whether he is overlooked or not but Adrian Belew is also one of my all time favourite guitar players.

Actually I think Pete T is rather underrated. I'd consider him one of the greatest rhythm guitarists ever.

There is a possibility that he was even more overrated than The Beatles, which is saying something.

Just one? I could name 20, but I'll name the obvious: Pink Floyd

Think what you want there ain't no law against it. There are plenty of people who think Floyd is overrated. So what does it prove? Overrated or not the Beatles are still one of the top bands in rock n roll history. And out of curiosity name me 19 more if you can I could use a good laugh.
