| Re: oldest or newest Allow me to start this post with these three words.... IN MY OPINION! I'd really love it if all of you Syd fans out there could explaint to me the facination with the man. I just don't see it in him. I have never been that impressed with Syd's contributions. His lack of self control and drug problems aside, I have never really found Syd's early work to be all that impressive. The material is dated, indicitative of a specific era of music (late '60's psychadelia). It lacks the timeless quality found in music generally accepted as masterful. It's derivitive of othes in the genre (Jefferson Airplane in particular predated Syd's work by a couple of years). And quite honestly, I find some of the longer pieces,(Astronomy Domine in particular) just seem to drone on and on with the same progerssion ad nauseum.......it's boring. I suppose if I was a drug addict looking to kill a few hours.... or a day..... or a year.... it would be something to put on and get high with..... But as a musician, and musicologist...It just doesn't cut it. Now if you defend your stance on Syd with "the Drug card".."Ya gott be high to appreciate it"..Then you have just lost all credibility here... don't even go there. Let the Mayhem begin Sincerely: Not a Syd Fan

| Re: oldest or newest I don't agree, but I agree...I also agree with mad yannis, but i think we're both on the verge of sounding wishy-washy.... Of course I love Waters/Gilmour's Floyd (though it was more Waters...), but you asked for Piper at the Gates, against TDB! Piper was my first PF album and it blew me away! I just thought it was interesting, to say the least! But TDB...while being quality work, it didn't have anything extra going for it. It's just well done music, but that's coz the group already had the praxis and technique from all those years of work, sort of like a baggage on 'how to make a good record'. But that doesn't make it anything special, nor anything outstanding; except that it's quite well done. But they were pretty much burnt out by then, they should've stopped even before Roger left, IMO. Erm...what I mean, is that what characterized PF as a 'product maker', shall we say (sorry, I can only speak in Design terms), is that they were always so cutting-edge and avant garde. But that's so easy to lose, it happens to the best of us. It's supposed to happen, actually. They just didn't have that edge, anymore. They were already something 'stablished', who repeats the formula of success. They kept on and on with their so called 'characteristic sound', when it turns out that their characteristic sound used to have a LOT to do with being original (which means going to the origin, contrary to what most people think it means), more than anything else. The only way to keep a 'product' fresh all the time, and always on the edge, is to keep re-inventing it...but that's just so damn hard! You either go Coca-Cola (a brand that'll always be there with loyal fans, who still want more of the same), or practically disappear, unless you can come up with something that'll blow everybody away. I'm sorry for usingsuch analogies, but I'm majoring in Graphic Design, and this is how I understand the industry. I think it's quite an adecuate analogy, though. Let the fire works begin, I already ducked and covered, you may attack, but I still think i'm on the right; studying products and art is what I do.

Mate, don't take offence, but I don't give a rat's ass if you're studying arts or ichtyology. I am an architect and so what? This doesn't make of you a musical critic (not that I give any credit to musical critics anyway! They're just full of shit, all of them) and first and foremost this doesn't make your opinion better than ours. Pink Floyd produced such great music and they didn't study music if you know what I mean... And, by the way, I disagree. Cheers.

| Re: oldest or newest I believe you misunderstood me; I'm terribly sorry, English is not my first language, and I didn't want to come up as a snob. I said I was studying Design, only as a way of apologizing for the kind of language I was using, that's all (because I don't know how to speak in musical terms, and I was taught to explain though the use of analogy) If I ofended you in any way, please, forgive me, it was not my intention to do so. I'd wish I was more fluent in this language. If we were speaking Spanish, I'd be able to hold a civil conversation, with ease. Sometimes I don't even know if I'm using theright words!! (I even think some of them might be made up...) It makes me nervous to speak in English, cause I make mistakes all the time, and I can never say what I really wanna say. I'm SORRY!! I really didn't mean any offense. Oh, crap. That was not what I meant, and I beg you to believe me. On the other hand, I tried Architecture as well, but the school I chose was too weird, I dunno; too poetic, or something...and I prefer Design, it's more fun for me, coz it's more artsy, or whatever. And since all I really care about is drawing, then it's either that or not knowing what to do with myself. I'm so tired of it all, anyway.

| Re: oldest or newest Thank you!!!!!!! I was beginning to feel so bad about myself!! (I was even considering leaving the forum, this kind of incidents always scare me away...) I don't think I'm such a bad person, but I always come up the wrong way, or saying the wrong things.

OK, Calm down..... As Mad Yannis pointed out, the P F catalog covers a lot of different stuff, and each of us has our individual preferences.
