must be some form of copyright protection so their pictures don't get sent around the internet.

It sounds more like a protection against direct-linking to images (they steal bandwith)...fortunaltely, most site owners are too dumb to figure this out, so you can still take images from other sites...

I still don't get why people try to protect the images they place to web. It's like freely walking on the street naked and rebuke people who are watching.

It's not like they do it coz they're mean!
If you direct-link an image from another site, you steal that site's bandwith, and cram their server. And that's really really bad.

Oh, I understand. But when you download the picture on your computer and then upload it, it's alright, isn't it? Sorry, I'm not much skilled in such things. I never direct-link an image.

Yes, if you upload from your hardrive to your own server, or your own space on a server, or a server where you're allowed to post images, then it's OK.
