Planet Mars close

I would guess Floyd fans are a little more cognizant of Astronomy than the average doofus, so I thought y'all might be interested in this:

On August 27, the planet Mars will be closer to the Earth than it has been in the last 59,000 years.

It won't be nearly this close again until 2287.

It's close proximity, plus the fact that Mars will be "full" (earth is directly between the Sun and Mars) it will be a splendid sight. A modest 75-power telescope should make Mars look as big as a full moon does to the naked eye. This should last thru September.

It rises in the East high enough to be easily visible by about 10:00pm and reaches it's zenith by about 1:00am.

I looked at it last night, but it was close to the full moon, so tonight should be better.

Good luck! I'll be unable to see it because of the city lights.

Umm yes...but you've missed the point....

Consult the universal lyrics database and identify the song reference...

I miss everything due to damn city lights...and still, I don't think we could see it with a naked eye (and I don't have a telescope)
So, good luck with that, to those who does.

You can see it OK, even in the city, with the naked eye. In fact, it will be the brightest object in the sky next to the moon.

I live in the Denver metro area, and (last night) it was also close to the full moon, and I could see it easily.

Obviously, it will be most dramatic for those in rural areas.

Well, you've got a couple of month's worth of chances. It's not like a stupid eclipse where you have a half-hour window.

I've seen some quite brilliant myself. I've always been fascinated with it all, as far back as I can remember.
