Re: lists

He's an alright drummer. But the drumming is certainly not what makes Pink Floyd a great band.

Re: lists

I think what YS8 said pretty much summed it all up. It's not like he's bad, he's just not outstanding. His stuff is pretty simple

Re: lists

I'm sorry? Excuse me? Have you listened to IO, DsotM, Meddle, More recently?

What, in your opinion makes great drumming?

Without Nick Mason's drumming, however you may rate it against other drummers, Pink Floyd music it would not have been. Full stop.

Lay off Nick.

Re: lists

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

None of the band were terrribly terrific musicians, but the combination of four distinct styles just seemed right.

Mason was the most average of them all.

Re: lists

Yeah, Nick really wasn't that adventurous drumming-wise. Now his little endeavours in car racing, that's another story.....

Re: lists

I've really gotten to appreciate Nick's drumming, but if I were to compare him to John Bonham (which I always compare drummers to out of bad habit), I'd really have to put on my protective armor to walk into this discussion.

Re: lists

The drumming on money is awesome. He does all these fills that are kind of off a little bit in the guitar solo but it sounds awesome. I just realized that.

Re: lists

its true that he wasnt the most exceptional, but he was good, and he threw together some pretty amazing shit if you ask me, some of the stuff is pretty easy, but some can get pretty complex. sure there wasnt really anything special about him, and he didnt go crazy or go on wild trips, but it seems kinda like he sorta held the band together, after all he was the only one who was in it the entire time (and didnt become a control freak like roger)?

Re: lists

Nick Mason is an awesome drummer, IMO. I mean, he's not going to blow you away technically (Keith Moon is the guy for that), but he had a feeling and emotion in his drumming style that makes it totally unique. Watch 'Saucerful of Secrets' or 'Echoes' (especially) from the Pompeii film, and tell me he isn't amazing.

Re: lists

You only think that because you saw it on Pompeii. I personally know nothing of drumming and my post here is redundant, but i will say that I too liked his drumming in Live in Pompeii

Re: lists

First of all, everyone loves to judge a great drummer by what he can do, the fills, the crashes, the drum solos, and all that, but pink floyd's music is not the kind of music where there are a great amount of opportunities for fills, you can't put mason up next to bonham because zeppelin's stuff gives a drummer a lot more freedom to go wild, floyd is restrained, play the beat, maybe a roll here and there but not a lot you can do, you put mason in zeppelin and bonham in floyd, mason would be on some of those top lists and bonham wouldn't.

Over all there is more to drumming than how many fills you can do, how fast you can play, how many neat little tricks you do, most of all its how it fits the music, Mason's drumming fits Pink Floyd perfectly, that's the way to judge, how it fits the music, when i'm listening to floyd, i can't think of a single time where i've gone, "i would have done that differently" that does it for me.
