Question What the hell is VCS3?

The band used this thing on DSOTM. What is this thing exactly?

cheers

Re: What the hell is VCS3?

three words: "On The Run"

it was used for the effects on this song. the airplane sounds, the fast keyboard riff, the works. its quite a find if you can get your hands on it. same goes for Moog keyboards and so on.

roger was seen playing with the VCS3 on the Pompeii video. if you havent seen that, BUY IT!

"A british version of the moog synthesiser", and now you'll be wondering what the heck is a moog synthesizer. Well, a kind of arcaic synthesizer I guess.

Re: What the hell is VCS3?

I guess you can't read what's written in that placard, so here is: "HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE VCS3 - Curved Air have, so have Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues and King Crimson, so could you. The VCS3 is the £330 synthesizer that gives you the whole spectrum of electronic effects."

Monophonic sequencer/synthesizer. Not too common. Seen used by Rog in the Live at Pompeii video (studio scenes, On the Run).

Re: What the hell is VCS3?

Actually the VCS3 is not the one Roger is tooling around with in Pompeii, that is a later model called the Synthi-A which has a sequencer (hence the keyboard).

Moog was made I think in about 1973, but it is not like VCS3. It's a normal synth with keyboard - similar sound to the later ARPs used by Pink Floyd (1975 - 1977 tours I think). Moog synthesizer was never used by Pink Floyd on an official record. Moog evolved from electric pianos and those Yamaha organs I guess. It was soon available worldwide. I have records of Czech jazz-rock bands from 1976 where they use the Moog synthesizer. It has a funky sound. It can be found for instance on Santana's Borboletta (1974), in track "Mirage" it is most notable.

On the other hand, VCS3 must have been made in 1972 or earlier. While Moog you play like a normal keyboard, VCS3 creates a simple note sequences which are then sped up and ran through some effects to give you "On The Run".

Re: What the hell is VCS3?

the MiniMoog has been used for just about every bassline in pop music since 1979

I don't know the history of moog synthesizers, but the excerpt I cited is taken from an article that appeared in the magazine New Musical Express on Sept 12, 1970.

Re: What the hell is VCS3?

What???? I haven't heard any pre-1973 record with that moog. That's beyond my imagination. Next time it would be Bach playing hammond!
