A look at Pink Floyd throughout the years

Okay folks, I'm finally getting around to posting, so here it is:

Throughout the years, we have seen many pictures of Pink Floyd within thier various albums. I have taken some time to look at these pictures, and to see if they mean anything, or how they could be tied in with the music. I have several pages of information written down on the subject, and I believe it is time to share it.

All of the CD's and pictures I have come from the 1994 Pink Floyd remasters (except for 'A Momentary Lapse'-1997). I do not know how these pictures differ from the ones on the original CD releases, as well as the vinyl releases. But I've put enough into this that I think everyone should be able to get a pretty god idea as to what I am talking about. Also, I will try to fit all of this into one post, but it may take a few because my computer has a tendency to freeze up.

--Piper At The Gates Of Dawn--
Right off the bat we see a psychadelic photo of the band on the cover of the CD booklet, each member being displayed at least twice; with this, they were letting everyone know who they were & what to expect (notice, no facial hair, everyone is clean shaven) On the inside are several pictures of the band in various psychadelic outfits; almost every page has a picture on it. Finally, towards the end, we see a mustache pop up on Nick Mason.

--A Saucerful Of Secrets--
Okay, with their second CD, things get a little different. On the cover is a picture of the band, but is is extremely small. Inside, the first photo we see is of David, Roger, Richard, & Nick<------what's this, no Syd? Also, in the picture the band isn't wearing any psychadelic clothing. (they have coats on, so it must have been cold). Next is one of my favorite pictures of all time, a picture of the five-man band. There very casual dress, and everyone appears to be comfortable, there are even a couple smiles. Then, the Corporal Clegg picture where the four-piece is gathered around a plane with flight suits on------>that is Gilmour, right? The next picture is of Syd, Roger, Nick, & Richard, the group is back in their psychadelic uniforms<--------Nick doesn't appear to be very comfortable, and Richard looks uncomfortable as well. But look at Roger, he looks extremely upset about being dressed this way,his arms are crossed and he is frowning; but Syd appears to be looking just fine, like this is where he belonged. The last picture is of 'The Piper' by himself, no shirt, with his hands behind his back as if he were bound. Also, throughout this album, David has a beard in some photos, and Nick still has his mustache in most.

--More--
With this booklet, there are many pictures from the actual movie, but there is only one photograph of Floyd, but it is a damn good one. The band is somewhat dressed in psychadelic clothing, but Roger Waters has a giant smile on his face (maybe from the cigarette in his right hand, eh?). David is just standing there, and Rick appears to have a bit of a grin on his face. Nick is also smiling big, and he is again the only one with any facial hair.

--Ummagumma--
I think it will be safe to say that this is where they finally stopped dressing up in psychadelic outfits, we see the band begin to take a more casual turn.On the cover, there are pictures of the band with the members in rotation. Inside the studio CD, we see many different pictures of the members of the band, but that is it. No group photos here, just single pictures. First are pictures of David where he looks like he's playing his guitar. Then there are a couple of Roger, one where he is sitting there with another giant smile on his face (and yes, another cigarette). Nick Mason's pictures are next, and there is one where he looks IDENTICAL to Charles Manson, I mean seperated at birth or what?!?! Finally, we get some pictures of Wright, and here he has a full beard as opposed to being shaven in earlier photos. Mason also has a beard, as well as Gilmour. No facial hair on Roger though. The live CD booklet just gives us many different pictures of the band playing various tunes.

--Atom Heart Mother--
With this album, we get no pictures of the band or of the band members. There are many various pictures throughout the booklet that were done by Storm Thorgeson & Hipgnosis.

--Meddle--
Only two photographs here, but I think the second one has got to be one of my favorites. First off, the band is lined up, top to bottom, staring with David and ending with Rick. The second picture of the band is in the middle of the booklet; the band is just sitting there, but the picture is incredible. It is done in black & white, and I think it shows us a more darker Floyd, because there are no smiles to be seen here. Also, the cover & inside was done by Thorgeson/Hipgnosis.

--Obscured By Clouds--
No pictures of the band, but the cover was once again done by Hipgnosis. There are many pictures inside from the movie, however, if that makes up for it at all.

--Dark Side Of The Moon--
In the beginning, there are four individual pictures of the band playing live (Nick looks very into it, very high, or very tired). There is only one photo of the band, and it is with Roger standing a bit in front of the other guys, with his hands crossed and a big grin across his face. The other members are standing around and a bit behind Mr. Waters, all looking in different directions. A great picture. I think that with this album and with this particular picture, it became very apparent that this was Roger's band. Once again, David, Rick, & Nick all have facial hair, but that's it, Roger is again the only baby-faced band member. Thorgeson & Hipgnosis were involved with this album as well.

--Wish You Were Here--
Various pictures brought to us again by Thorgeson/Hipgnosis. The only pictures of the band are all of them in the studio recording the album. One picture stands out though, it is of Roger & David. Roger has his arm around David's neck, and they both appear to have smiles on<------this picture is very small, but it is an incredible one, and the last one we get of it's kind.

--Animals--
No, no folks, no pictures of our beloved Pink Floyd here on this dark outlook on life. Many pictures in black & white brought to us by Thorgeson & Hipgnosis, again. These pictures are different than previous ones, though, these have a very dark and gritty feel to them.

--The Wall--
What?!?! Did you really think we would actually get to see the band?? No, I'm afraid not, we cannot see the band behind the wall. Inside is a drawing from Gerald Scarfe, it is of all the characters from The Wall: the judge, the schoolmaster, the wife, etc. The front and back of the CD are nothing but bricks, bricks to keep us out.

--The Final Cut--
Here, we get many war-related pictures, but they were not done by Storm Thorgeson or by Hipgnosis. There are no pictures of the band included, but maybe next time.

--A Momentary Lapse Of Reason--
Okay!! Finally, we get a picture of our beloved band. But wait, where's Roger?? Oh yeah, that's right, he escaped, didn't he. Anyway, the picture is of David, Nick, & Richard; they all are smiling and they appear to be as comfortable and as lively as ever. Really a great picture. Various pictures of items inside, none by Hipgnosis, though; the pictures and cover were done by Thorgeson & Nexus.

--The Division Bell--
No, sorry, no pictures of the band.

Well, that is it. That is my look upon Floyd through the years, throughout the triumph and the trials. Of course, Is There Anybody Out There? and P.U.L.S.E. are jam-packed with pictures of the band------> highly recomended if you want to see some more great pictures of Pink Floyd. Also recomended if you want to hear some great live music.

Wow that's ridiculously extensive! Great job! I like the DSotM pics and the WYWH pics the best.
