I've been wondering ---- Can any true Floyd fan have an actual favorite Floyd album?
I guesse maybe some can. For me it's impossible. I've been listening to Floyd for over three decades now - being born a flower child to hippy parents in the '60's who were into every 'up&coming' British band out there.
I was too young at the time to comprehend 'bands' let alone know which songs and albums belonged to which band, but
I knew which ones I liked the sound of best.
I can remember certain songs they played giving me a different feeling than others- only later to find out that all these certain songs were from a group called The Pink Floyd. Each time a new album was released, my parents would pick it up and I always loved it. By the time The Wall was released, I was a teenager and took over from there.

So you see - I grew up with Floyd. I listened to (and fell in love with) each new album in their chronological order. Unlike many who at sometime in their life were introduced or attracted to a particular Floyd song resulting in puchasing the album the song was on (usually The Wall) which inevitably leads to researching every other Floyd album they can get their hands on (they can't help it).
In this way the albums are listned to (and fallen in love with) in various order.

Does anyone think this makes a difference in how a person perceives Floyd music - is this how a person could have one particular favorite album? 'Cause for me it's simply impossible. Hmmmmm....

I can relate to what you said, that a true Floyd fan can't have a favorite Floyd album. Although I only came into contact with Pink Floyd in the neo-psychedelic summer of 1987, so I didn't get the albums in chronological order, I don't have a favorite album either. As a matter of fact, I only knew the band because my sister bought "Delicate Sound of Thunder", which, in my opinion, is not the best album to start with. Or maybe it is, since it has a "Greatest Hits"-sorta selection of songs.

In my birthday that year, a few months after my sister got Delicate, I asked my aunt for a Floyd record as a gift. She gave me Delicate, so I traded it for both The Wall and A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Then, I got completely hooked. I then watched the movie The Wall late at night in a TV channel (can you believe they actually played it on TV?).

So, I started buying Floyd albums. All of my money went into that. And, as a teenager, I didn't have enough money, so it took me a few years to get all of them. I had some trouble liking a few albums, such as Atom Heart Mother and Animals. Although I now love them, I find them a little too difficult to like to. Maybe like Radiohead's Kid A. Haven't heard it, but everybody says it's a difficult album.

And now, after years listening, I can't say I have a favorite album. Each one of them is unique, completely different from the others. There are only a very few songs (among all of the songs Pink Floyd ever played) that I can't say I really like, such as "Several Species..." and "Dogs of War". One thing that I see makes Floyd unique, at least for me, is that for most bands, I don't like all of their works. Say for instance Led Zeppelin, whom I love as well. I don't like all of their albums. There's always a relative percentage of songs I don't like. Say 20% for Led Zep. But as far as Pink Floyd is concerned, I LOVE about 99.8% of their work.

Well, I am getting a little long here, so I'll cut this off so you won't get too bored with my ramblings!

Floydian Cheers,
Paulo R. Dallagnol

Paulo - that is almost exactly my thoughts.

Though i didn't start with Delicate Sound oF Thunder - i think it's good and bad to start with because it's bad because it's not all the good stuff and good because it has alotta good stuff!

Also, Dogs of War and Several Species of Small Animals....are not my favorito songs.

But no, i don't think you can have a Favorite Floyd album once your hooked - cause it's all up hill from there - and the only time you'll reach the top is when you see the next mountain on the horizon
(nobody steal that -i'm using it for lyrics  )

Though i found it easy to like Animals - god what a great album. I donno - all the albums give me a different felling yet their all Floyd so how the hell you can have a favorite i don't know - hell it's hard for me to pick one to pop in the CD player!

I'm like Shit - DSOTM, Or Final Cut? But i haven't heard The Wall Disc 2 in a while - or Echoes,
shit....
....
...
....and then i close my eyes and pick one randomley and say ah! That's what i wanted all along (or was it) then i jam to it with my keyboard and guitar! And i'm in floyd heaven- staring at the 3 by 5 ft prism on my ceiling with a beam of light coming from one end and out the other into the heart of the sun - my sun that is, my soul and me.

Because once you listen to Floyd - Floyd will listen to you.

I started At the age of 12 with three albums:
First Dark side, then Wish you were here, then The Wall.Plus my Brother had an audio cassette of Momentary lapse of reason.
Only after I finished High school started to discover other Floyd albums for myself. I bought them until I have today most of them.

I agree that most Pink Floyd fans probably don't have a favorite album, but many (such as myself), have an album that they feel especially close to. Mine would be Wish You Were Here, being the first Floyd album that I actually LISTENED to. I wouldn't say that Wish You Were Here is my favorite album, even though I've probably referred to it as that, but it is certainly the album I feel closest to and hold most dear.

You're right, there is no "best" album from The Pink Floyd. Every era is different. I can only say which albums I'm listening more than others: Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall, The Division Bell and P.U.L.S.E.

Shine On,
Floydian Theo

I think I can and something to this discussion. I, unlike other Floyd fans, discovered Floyd at 18. In my teenage years I smoked a lot of pot and listened to punk music, floyd to me was pussy rock. Then I heard DSotM, and it all changed. While listening to the album I felt as if I was under the influence, but I was not, it was just the magic that is Floyd. Anyway, I thought Dark Side was the best album ever, and I went out and searched for other floyd albums. It's been 7 years and I am still obsessed with Floyd, but oddly enuf, Dark Side is no longer my fave. As a matter of fact no album is my fave, but rather there are 3 that stick out. WYWH is musically, in my opinion, the best. DSotM is lyrically the best. And The Wall, while I don't believe it is a great album, works as a great narrative. The movie is even better then the album.

Cool, yea i agree with you about the Musical aspect of WYWH - it's a great album in terms of a great integration of all the Floyd sound.

I could see how Floyd could seem to be *cough cough "pussy rock" - compared to most rock and punk music it isn't that - well it isn't as hard.

But that's the beauty of it - it's just not hard rock but not soft it's just Floyd - you can't really describe it!!!

Gosh! I am so glad to find I'm not the only one obsessed with The Pink Floyd.

I cannot claim to have been into the Floyd for three decades - just over two really - but A Nice Pair were my first experience of their music.

In 1980, I discovered felloe fans who liked to listen in the same way as myself and since then I haven't looked back. An Air Force buddy and I listened to DSOTM 8 times consecutively while witnessing my Bull snake's failed attempts at consuming a larger-than-manageable rat.

DSOTM is, in my opinion, their greatest effort, even though one must agree that WYWH is, as a concept album, far superior. (BTW, there are universities in the North of England whose music classes analyse the exceptionally long intro to Shine on the WYWH album.) What better tribute could Syd have been given by his former band?

Anyway, there are just too many very good albums to choose from for a single favourite, so I shall have to stick my neck out and say WYWH, DSOTM, Meddle, The Wall in that order.

Floyd on!
Byron

Heheh, glad to be of service.

Erm, to which bit of my last post, my thinking could you relate most? Just curious as I introduced several new issues - for me, anyway - and things can get rather hectic if not watched closely.

"Who let all this riff raff into the room?"

Cheers,
Byron
