I think it's due to the fact that your area subscribes to the Spring forward (GMT+1 hour), Fall backward (GMT) principle of Earthly time.

interesting, i understand the principle, however, i still do not understand how i can be living in the actual GMT zone, and yet be an hour ahead of it. the mind boggles...

I am also in the GMT zone and we are currently experiencing British Summer Time (BST) or GMT+1 hour, thus 1 hour faster than GMT. Doesn't your country spring forward and fall back?

I'm Central time, and right now I have myself set to Eastern time to have the correct time if that helps any. Then when we fall back, I'll switch it to Central.

yes, i had just made an incorrect assumption about GMT always being GMT, in that it was constant, and that when, in my country, ireland, we spring forward and fall back, the definitive GMT came with us, which obviously, it does not.
