No, THAT was worse.

I believe it would be quite safe to assume that Gilmour was a smoker in the early 70's (who wasn't?).. if you listen to "Plays the Animals", the live show from 1977, you can hear that his voice is quite hoarse. I think that would have been enough for most to give it up. On the Pompeii DVD he is quite clearly stoned... in the interview with him his eyes are glazed over and when he denies that they are using heavy drugs, he can't even look at the camera... he looks so depressed! Drugs were the normal thing to do back then as well as cigarettes. I would be surprised to hear he didn't smoke, but with the way he sounded on "Is there anybody out there, the wall live" (that amazing vocal on comfortably numb) it seems he may have quit after the horrors of the 1977 tour. We all know that the band was in a very different place after that tour... I would be too after playing to a faceless mob in a stadium night after night for months on end.
