Which DSotM CD should I buy?

I'm quite new to Pink Floyd in general (shame on me), and I'm going to buy Dark Side of the Moon. There appears, however, to be many different versions (i.e. SACD, gold, 'harvest japan', etc. etc.). Any advice as to which CD I should buy?

From some of what I've read and seen, some versions are allegedly better/worse quality than others.

Re: Which DSotM CD should I buy?

I'd get the one with the music on it, but that's just me....

Sorry, couldn't resist. Welcome by the way..
The Gold edition is nice, but I have not heard any difference in sound quality from a standard release. I have not purchased any SACD's yet, so I'd be the wrong guy to ask about that. The Harvest edition, same holds true there as well.

Dark Side is a must have if you enjoy Floyd. For many of us, it was our introduction to the best band ever. It really doesn't matter which one you get, just get one soon. Enjoy!

I'd suggest you get as much of an original press as you can...(unless you DO have an SACD player, coz I've heard it's quite an interesting experience)

The 1994 EMI re-release should do you fine. It's the most common copy I've seen, and it's also remastered. And I'm pretty sure you could get it for cheap.

The new 30'th anniversary edition is remastered in 5.1 and includes SACD layer. It's good and probably the best sounding of the bunch, but I got the 1993 edition just because the cover is more true to the original.

Yes. That is the one to get.

Re: Which DSotM CD should I buy?

Personally, I find the sound quality to be far clearer on the 30th anniversary edition--and I likely will NEVER own an SACD player. I started my Floydian journey with PULSE, and when I first heard the 20th anniversary edition, I couldn't figure out how it could've been hailed as such a sound-engineering achievement. The sound on it is entirely too muddied, whereas the 30th actually renewed my interest in the studio album. I still go for PULSE first most of the time, when I want to hear DSotM, but I do at least feel the SACD is a studio version worth playing from time to time. I recommend that one.

I truthfully don't hear a difference between the two - except that maybe the 30th is a tad bit more trebly and clear.

Besides, the 1994 one will be cheaper. Cheaper, I say!

Re: Which DSotM CD should I buy?

Well, the 30th is the one I've got, but someone else told me that if I didn't have an SACD player, then any other pressing would sound better than this one...I dunno, though; since I started my collection only this year, the only Dark Side CD I've got is the 30th ann. release...

Re: Which DSotM CD should I buy?

Well, I think the 30th is the one to get, because even if you don't have the SACD now, you will later on, and you'll be glad you got it.
