Re: Live at Pompeii

Hey,

Did you guys ever watch Live at Pompeii? What are your impressions on it? I've seen it the first time many years ago and I think it is the greatest music video ever made. Seriously. I mean, who would think of going to Pompeii and playing only to the ghosts that are there, considering it was 1974? The whole feeling throughout the concert, specially in "Careful with that axe, Eugene" is extraordinary. A masterpiece!

Although Delicate and Pulse are great shows, they're different. Lots of awesome special effects and everything, but if I had my pick, I'd get Live at Pompeii. Well, besides the fact that I love the songs they play at Pompeii, of course!

So whatcha think of it all?

Cheers,
Paulo

Re: Live at Pompeii

first of all, It wasn't 1974, but either 1972 or 1971.
second, I think It's an awsome performance.
I have the Officiall Full version Video, and two CD versions.
I think Live at pompeii has some of the best versions for the songs on it. I really dig That Show. and David's Guitar on Echoes is amazing!
I also think that the 2nd part of Saucerfull of secrets on Pompeii is Beautiful. Generaly,I think that the songs that are both on Pompeii & UMMAGUMMA has the better versions on Pompeii. However, I think that UMMAGUMMA has the best version for Astronomy Domine for an Official release.
Anyway, Pompeii is a beautifull show and a must for the serious Flodian.

Have fun...

Re: Live at Pompeii

You're correct, I wasn't sure of the date, so I went to Amazon.com and they had it as 1974. I also thought it was a little too late, but since I was running out of time, I wrote the message anyway. So, I checked it out and it was filmed in 1972, with the cinema premiere being in September 1972. Shame on me!!!!

Cheers,
Paulo

We forgive you D!
Don't sweat it.
I absolutely love Pompeii.
I have watched it so many times my tape is starting to get grainy.
Gonna have to get me another.
Think they'll put it onto DVD?

Re: Live at Pompeii

I sincerely hope so. I mean, if the Pink Floyd The Wall DVD was a best-seller, why wouldn't Live at Pompeii be?

At least with DVDs we don't have to worry about wearing them out for watching them so much, like VCR tapes... The one I have is the third one. Ok, the first one was a copy I made myself, but I wore the second one out.

Cheers,
Paulo

Re: Live at Pompeii

They might put in on DVD in a couple years after they haven't released anything new for a while, just to keep the fans happy. Kind of like when they released several of their albums on minidisc back in '94 or something like that.

Re: Live at Pompeii

Yeah, I guess I'll never understand their marketing tactics after all. There's a lot of stuff going on in the background that we don't hear about. Contracts, deals with different labels and stuff like that. Of course we always lose in the end...

I thought what Pearl Jam is doing is really cool, you know? How they are releasing a LOT of their concerts on CDs, so they don't have to compete with b**tleggers? Smart thinking, if fans want material, they'll have material!

Cheers,
Paulo

Re: Live at Pompeii

Live at Pompeii is a wonderful exibition for many reasons: the atmosphere,
the sequence of songs and the new interpretation of all songs (echoes, Careful,
Saucerful of secrets, Set the controls are very different from the album takes)
and also 'cause it represents the last sperimental and psychedelic period of
Pink Floyd; infact they play at Pompeii while they were composing the Dark side
of the moon. So, I cant live a day without its listening!
Please, can someone tell me the words of "Careful with that axe, Eugene",
'cause I'm an italian boy and I can't understand what Waters sings. Thanks

Re: Live at Pompeii

To be exact, what Pearl Jam is doing is releasing every concert of their 25 date tour on double disc CD. It would suck to want to collect them all, considering how one here in Canada costs about $40. Difficult enough to get all of Pink Floyd's albums.

Re: Live at Pompeii

Joker,

Actually, there aren't real lyrics to "Careful with that axe, Eugene"... Just Rog's scream...

Well, he also whispers "whisper... whisper... careful with that axe, Eugene". Anything else, people?

Radiochair, I know the Pearl Jam records are expensive, but at least their fans have the option of buying official, nice-remastered with cool covers and all, records. I think it's super that they can do that, instead of paying for b**legs which can have dubious quality and can be really expensive (at least down here).

Cheers,
Paulo

Re: Live at Pompeii

Yeah but if it doesn't have copyrights you can buy four Bootlegs and CDR trade for them 20 More CD's, which half of them would be soundboard recording of classic shows or rare radio sessions, which still has artwork and everything, all withour breaking the law, and without the record company sucking our vains for more money. All this after you have bought all or most of the offical releases.

Re: Live at Pompeii

Dear Dallagnol,
if you listen quite well you can hear something like "down down, down down, the star is screaming ... beneath the lies ..." and something else; after, he begins to scream greatly until "careful, careful, careful with that axe, Eugene" and then the song exploses! How I said, I dont understand english very well, but I can hear words in the first part, not screams. I'd like if you'll help me!
Thank you,

joker

Re: Live at Pompeii

Speaking of Careful with that Ax, I have a PHISH CD where they spoof Roger's scream, along with alot of other songs by bands like the doors and grateful dead.

You're right, a live audience, without a stadium full of fans, creating an excellent, psychedelic and colorfull concert, with a background of a mystic Pompeii. That's the different between Pink Floyd and the rest.

Re: Live at Pompeii

I think roger's also wispering something
like "Tyshe, Tyshe Tyshe..."
Than he's Blowing "Wohhhhhh"
Later He's Wispering of course "Carefull, Caferull[two bass notes] Carefull, with that Axe Eugene..."
Then Nick is takin' a drum riff and roger
goes "RRRRRoouuuughHHHHAAAAAAAAA"
AND "AAAAAAYYYYYAAAAAAAAYYYYIIIIIIHHH"
and then David is doin' marvolous things with his guitar. Than roger is wispering again...
