Re: Mellotron On "Atom Heart Mother"

I know Someone, well I kinda Met him personaly twice or three times and talked with him on the phone a couple more times, which is a proffetional keyboard player and he told me that pink floyd In Atom Heart mother, in order to create a specefic sound "That I can't pronounce on this forum" ,used a Mellotron, although they already had an orchestra backup, cause the orchestra just couldn't produce that sound.
Now we already knew that pink floyd used the mellotron on Sysyphus in UMMAGUMMA but now it figures they've might also used it on Atom Heart mother.

Any comments?

Um, no. No comment.

Except - that that's pretty cool - i'm sure you could say what the sound was - just describe it lightly eh?

Re: Mellotron On "Atom Heart Mother"

You are correct. That is a Mellotron. A Mellotron is an early sampler, it is with no comparison to todays digital samplers. This instrument was very poor and went out of tune at the drop of a dime. A few people I know have played one. John Paul Jones was another that used one (ex. The Rain Song - Houses Of The Holy)

Re: Mellotron On "Atom Heart Mother"

Yeah the mellotron bit in "Atom Heart Mother" is awesome. Very chaotic but beautifully orchestrated. However, my favourite use of the mellotron in a Floyd tune would have to be "Sysyphus, pt. 4".

Re: Mellotron On "Atom Heart Mother"

They do sound really cool (when they work). But WrightKeys is right. (No pun intended). Near impossible to tune. I have a live King Crimson CD where you can hear the thing meltdown on stage. Sounds kinda like a dropped bagpipe going through a chorus pedal. The best mellotron I've heard would have to be from the Moody Blues. The original keyboard player had worked at the factory where they were made, so he knew how to correct some of the problems with them.
