| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species I'm like Sydney. I use the internet to sample music from artists that people reccommend to me. Heck, if it wasn't for the net I likely wouldn't have been a Floyd fan. I find that I am buying more cds and music dvds than ever because of the net. The RIAA can stop my downloads all they want but that just means less money for them. |

| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species I think that most "true" music fans will only use the Internet to sample. I remember back when I had a 33.6K modem (gross, I know!) I downloaded 3 or 4 entire Floyd albums to decide which ones to buy next. And, of course, I got so into them that I bought them all. Now, unfortunately, most people out there download ALL their music and don't buy ANY. It is for this reason the record companies are taking action. If it weren't for leechers like that then the record companies wouldn't be worrying about piracy. However, there are tons of freeloaders, so can you really blame the industry for wanting to put a stop to it?

| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species Album sales have never been higher. If single sales are dropping off, it's because most of it is bloody rubbish and the teen market (for it is they that are the largest single buying demograph) are spending their money on ringtones rather than songs that they have already purchased in album format.

Like I've said before, the real problem is that the music industry (as embodied by the likes of the RIAA) doesn't realize they've been made obsolete. There is a huge upheaval coming in intellectual property law... Were I in college today, I'd seriously consider a career in patent law.

| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species The problem is that the music industry is using a system that was designed for the bloody 80's, except they've replaced vinal with CDs. They don't realise that by making all their CDs copy protected and all the rest, that they only annoy the customer who just wants to listen to CDs on their computer. Anyone who is interested in ripping music and distributing it over the net can easily bypass these players that auto-install themselves on your PC when you put them in your drive. (I happen to have a professional audio editing software program that couldn't care less about those type of programs). The industry doesn't realise that if they just designed a new distribution system, they could utilise the internet to boost sales further. But that's not going to happen, is it?

| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species That document is about the future of mind control, isn`t it? They could delete everything that they wouldn`t like to see on somebody`s computer, not only audio files. Help! George Orwell`s 1984 is becoming to reality!

More like a guaranteed 'invasion of privacy' - that's worse than a risk of copywright. Anyway, if material isn't circulated from fear of infringment, how do they expect to market it in the first place? DJ PlayLists?

| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species It's not logical, and for that reason, it will never happen. iPods and other mp3 players are becoming more and more popular...the only way those devices can function is from loading songs that are on a computers hard drive onto the mp3 player. Plus, I own a mac, so I don't care...HA!

| Re: PC Music: Endangered Species I can give you some general insight, I think... The better you know Windows, the harder it will be to adjust to Linux - a lot of things look similar, but are nothing like their Microsoft counterparts. Linux is not Unix (that's what Linux means, btw), but it is so similar as makes no odds. If you have a Unix background, though, you'd probably already know all about it. If you want a word processor, spreadsheet, email client, and web browser, getting going on Linux will be quite easy, and the software won't cost anything at all. Use the GUI and ignore the command prompt as much as you can - which is quite a bit, really. Be prepared to have to call somebody for some help getting your 'net access setup. as your ISP probably won't have a clue as to how to help you. Get an add-in like Webmin to take some of the complexity out of setting up and maintaining the system. If you want to do anything more, or actually understand what it is you are already doing, go down to the local community college and take a class - which is probably the right thing to do, anyway, unless you're already a techno-geek.
