Aha! Right there! The "elite" group idea. Active members is awesome, but if everyone's trying to be competitive to be in "elite" groups, where's the fun in that? If you've got something to say, just say it. Also, everyone should try to contain their conversations that are non-Floyd into AOL or MSN, and any "chatting leakage" should be something that you think should be preserved and for public people to see. Just Babbling is good for off-topic subjects yes, but actual "babble" is more for private chat programs. I think that some newbies might be taken aback by how some members are a closely knit group, and they might be hesitant to post in some threads, thereby interrupting their "conversation." This isn't all to be rude to anyone or anything (sorry if you take it wrong) but I think that by reducing idle chit-chat between friends, newbies might have the courage to post a question or a topic (that isn't just introductory or something) and start more posting on what we all came here for: a common interest and respect for Pink Floyd. I'm also not assuming all newbies are like this, but there might be some. So maintain friendships more outside of the forum, and I think it might help.

I also think that expanding the amount of people on here would be great, it'd be like a little Floydian city.

Expanding it so that there is more active members on at the same time can be interesting but it can also be a VERY bad idea. My friend goes to some Michael Jackson one where they get about 40-60 people on at the same time and it's absolute hell, you can never keep up with the threads and people are always at each other's throats, a moderator's nightmare. If we're going to do this whole politness thing having that many members on at the same time is just ridicilous.

I'm growing rather tired of references to some elite group or other... I don't see it, I see members that have been posting for a while and that have formed relationships. It takes time to form relationships, not just on here but in any part of life. You can't expect to just fly in and know all the insides at once (unless you've gone and read the forums which some people (ie TillT) do and they get to learn a little before they join) I've compared this getting to know you to high school before, well it applies to all aspects of life, new school, new workplace, new neighbourhood. It takes time to learn the ropes. This so called elite group is not trying to keep people out, they are doing their best to make people feel welcome and there are members who make a point of saying hello to newbies.

Some conversations can not be contained to MSN cos they started here and involve more than one person and some of those people don't have MSN, This place would be boring without conversations and inside jokes, it's what shapes a community and gives it character and personality..

There is no one here refusing to let people in, that's silly.. perhaps being a little nicer to people would be good but other than that I think we are fine as we are..

cheers

Shamus Laughs came in and answered my question with amazing preciseness.(it was kinda more about sound effects, I just dont word things right) Each one of the active members here have their own uniqe talents which complement and harmonize the whole.

NNJ summed it up well.

Sydney, what happens at other forums wouldn't necessarily happen here. It's the mood and the atmosphere which keeps the spirits up.

Bottom line is: You can't treat new people poorly because you don't want this board to grow in population. We could try treating them more politely and see what happens. Try not to be so pessimistic, maybe it'll be great, but we'll never know unless we give it a chance. Just because we're a bit nicer doesn't mean the active member list is going to shoot through the roof anyways.

I agree. That's crazy talk.

Pearlygirl: I didn't claim that as well. All I am saying is, I haven't seen those specific instances of yours i.e. I haven't seen people be rude w.r.t DDTs (atleast the established folks)

Re: Community Ideas

Crazy talk: The idea that it is a supposition of anyone that politisse on his part will lead to a sharp increase in membership.

Elite: An up-and-coming ironic reference to unknown members of this forum of the type that will soon become an inside joke (antecedant being 'ironic reference' rather than 'unknown members').

Meanie butt: I know you are but what am I?

Re: Community Ideas

I'm not saying let's not be nice to people so that our memeber base won't get big... I'm all up for being nice and polite to people. I'm saying that with a big number of members it gets harder to keep tabs on the occasional idiots that join and then the mod's job becomes impersonal and through that we would also lose a huge charm of what this place is..

Plus I don't think that the some 2000 of our inactive members are all not posting because of people being mean.. that's just silly. There are many reasons why people don't post and I think that this weird notion that you have to be "brave" to start talking on a forum is a crock of shit quite frankly

cheers

Also there's no way to un-join. Hence 4000+ members.
