"Money" cover on The Italian Job

I just saw the new hollywood update of The Italian Job last night (crap film by the way don't bother seeing it).
It has a cover of Money that is played in the film (when the goodies are stealing a load of gold bricks if i remember correctly) and then again at the end credits. The cover itself is crap, in my opinion it would have done the film lots of good if they using the real version of it. The vocals are really annoying, and they cut out loads of the lyrics and swapped things round just to shorten the song.

I stayed right to the end of the credits waiting to see a nice satisfying mention of Pink Floyd but instead there was none at all. It just had "Money by Roger Waters". How disappointing. I know Roger Waters was the sole writer of the song, but still why doesn't Pink Floyd get credits for playing the instruments etc? Was it a result of the court case that Pink Floyd would no longer get any credit for the songs Roger Waters wrote himself?

There's a new Italian movie that has Pink Floyd's music in its soundtrack (Shine on you crazy diamond and The great gig in the sky).

'Buongiorno, Notte' di Marco Bellocchio

'Good morning, Night' the title is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson.

It tells about a period called, in Italy, 'the Years of lead'.
On 16th March 1978 Aldo Moro, leader of Italy's Christian Democrats party, was kidnapped by the Red Brigades, his bodyguards murdered. His body was found on 9th May 1978, inside the boot of a red Renault parked in a street half-way between the headquarters of the DC party and that of the Communist party. This episode is one of the most tragic and traumatic in the history of the Italian republic. (tratto da un'articolo di Francesco Troiano)

The director says about the choice of Pink Floyd’s music: ”I have raised with the Pink Floyd’s music the agony of those years, even if the songs aren’t part of my culture, but someone explained me that this music is a clear example of the tragicity of those years”.(tratto da Pianeta Rosa)

You save a lot of money in licensing if you use a cover of a famous song-- that's why so many commericals have Bealtes covers but very few have actual Beatles songs.

The cover didn't use anyone's work besides Roger's. Had he co-written it with other people, their names would have been included, but they only have to give credit where credit is due.

I didn't say no one ever uses the original version. It's just a lot more expensive.

I saw the italian job yesterday and was very disapointed when it was a cover version and even dissapointed when they skipped the guitar solo and saz solo, the monsters!

True from a legal standpoint.

However, I do still think that since the song was on a Pink Floyd album and not a Roger Waters album, the band should have been mentioned in some way. I don't see why both couldn't have been acknowledged.

Well because this is the format for the credits:

Song title:
Written by:
Performed by:
Copyright information:
Year recorded:

Dave, Rick, and Nick, by letting 'Money' be ascribed to Roger, acknowledged that it was his work and they were, in effect, merely studio musicians playing his piece. Otherwise whenever a movie included a snippet from Carmen, they'd not only have to acknowledge Bizet, but also the original French cast and orchestra.

True, of course. It's just that, aren't these pieces also owned by Pink Floyd, Ltd.? I would think that would make crediting the whole band a legitimate thing to do...

If the song is owned by a legal entity known as 'Pink Floyd, Ltd.,' then it will show up in the copyright information. However, if the song is owned by Capitol (which it may be), then that's the name that goes in.

Ahh. Well, I don't know who actually has the legal ownership, although my personal guess is Pink Floyd Ltd.
