I always thought that Roger was portraying himself as a "dog". i think he was pointing out how "dragged down" he felt and maybe had a fear of dying alone of cancer a sad old man. wasn't he going through a divorce. I'm not sure about the rest of floyd. I don't know that roger was too concerned with putting forth their points of view.

i don't think he was going through a divorce. i read somewhere that pigs on the wings was written while he was either newly wed or engaged to some niece of a marquis or something like that.

Indeed, he was newly engaged, it was to a niece of a marquis (or something like that) and "Pigs on the Wing" was for her.

But here's my take on the whole thing. The "Dogs" are the fat corp heads and politicians, people who "believe at heart everyone's a killer" just like them, who take advantage of people as a way of making a living, and who are "dragged down by the stone", "all alone and dying of cancer" at the end.

The "Pigs" (there are "Three Different Ones", don't forget) are:
1. The underlings of the Dogs; the people who do the Dogs' dirty work with "head down in the pig bin", etc.
2. Maggie. We all know how much Rog loved this particular "f@cked up old hag".
3. Mary Whitehouse. "Hey you, Whitehouse..." "Mary, you're nearly a treat..." Rog had kind of a reputation for slamming people who spoke negatively about him or his band or pissed him off in other ways, eg. Andrew "Floyd" Webber, Roger Daltrey, Dave Gilmour, Stanley Kubrick...Anyway, the "house proud town mouse" was publicly and vocally opposed to the Floyd because, according to her, they supported drugs or sex or something back in the '60s.

The "Sheep" are basically the British public, people who will listen to any of the garbage being fed to them by the Dogs. This song is kinda hopeful (and kinda blasphemous, thank you 23rd psalm :grin: ); Roger hopes the people will rise up against their oppressors, etc.

The different parts of "Pigs on the Wing" have two different meanings...the first one is basically a love song (a Roger Waters love song...odd), the second is saying "Now that you know about all of this, if you still want to be with me, go right ahead."

I think Roger kinda identified with the "Dog" label...this was at a time where he was tired of the whole rock star label, perhaps feeling "the weight of the stone", blah, blah, blah.

Maybe it went to his head.

I agree with majority of it.
But have you read "Animal Farm"?

The pigs are in fact the "Corrupt Industrialists" , they Feed the sheep information, the Dogs are under the Pigs control ("Pigs on Wing" - First on 4 feet, then on 2 feet then they fly! [Read the book]) anyway, the Dogs are like 'body guards' in the story, but i think they're much more complex in "Animals".

As far a I know Rog was divorced from his first wife sometime before The Wall, and had since married again, I don't know what the time frame for either was. But I believe he is still married to the second.

Yes, it may very well be a love song - obviously the exact opposite of the tone of the album, in effect creating a much more complex macro-structure. But i believe, in context "Pigs on the Wing" (1 & 2) also have connotations (mentioned above).

I have read Animal Farm. I personally don't think Rog would base an entire 45-minute piece around a book, as he has so many other things to be pissed off about :smile:

Yea that's true, but he seemed to be quite an intellectual - very "deep" guy, so I think he might very well have used "Animal Farm" and used the same qualities of the different animals - only in a modern context.

Rog did use Animal as a guide almost to the music, but it isn't a narrative like the book was. Also Roger is complaining about society in general and the book was more aimed at the well intentioned but obviously flawed ideals of communism.
