What kind of music does he already listen to? That is important, because if he is in that high school angry stage, he might enjoy The Wall, but if he is into orchestrations, something else, like Meddle or WYWH, but be the case. And I could go on, but you get my point.

Thanks for the help. I ended up giving him wish u were here, and told him to tell me what he thinks. My rational was that if he liked it, I would give him darkside as a follow up.

when I was in high school, I listened to nothing but mainstream radio music. Sometimes I wonder where this sudden maturation of musical taste came from? I do know that wherever it came from it's here for good and I can't ever see myself going back. This band is the bridge I crossed to form the foundation of who I am today. Anyone with similar thoughts?

I think at some stage you get bored / tired of the repetitious cliche crap that is on the radio...and go seeking something that is lyrically and musically more interesting / moving / original.

And the golden age of Pink Floyd was some of the most interesting / moving / original stuff to come out of the rock and roll era.

I think introducing The floyd via The "Echoes" collection is usualy a bad choice.

I prefer to start people with the first three albums I started with:

1. DSOTM
2. WYWH
3. The wall

and in that order.
after that I will probe and adjust according to their personal musical taste.
Good albums to follow are likely to be Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, A saucerful of Secrets, Live Ummagumma, and The POMPEII Video. if they like those, they are llikely to be hooked as pink floyd fans, even if they don't like the rest of the albums (slim chance).
Anyway, My recommendation, thewayuwhisper, is to introduce your friends to pink floyd albums and live performances, and NOT Collections, cause pink floyd was always based on Full Length albums and Live performances, and NOT singles/video clips. Even though they got famous at start with Arnold Layne and "See Emily Play", They refused to play those alive, saying that this is NOT what their music is really about, and prefering tracks Like "Interstellar Overdrive" and
"Astronomy Domine" (which I Like best On Live Ummagumma). This has payed them well in the long term, and in fact assured them of the solid fan base, that exists untill today.
Otherwise, they would have have been just a flash in the pan!
The only Collection I recommend for starters is Relics, which contains Syd Barret era Tracks Not available On "Piper", and is in fact better than Piper IMHO, for it combines the spirits of Piper and Saucerful, two very important albums of the late 60's.

Yoav.
