Dsotm?

I'm not sure if this has been posted before. But if I was to try to turn someone on to PF who is only a bit opened minded, is DSOTM the album I give them? I'm curious to see the reaction if I give them something else. Do I give the "popular" album?

DSOTM would be the one I would choose, definitely.

The wall isn't a bad choice.

DSOTM certainly has the widest mainstream appeal.

Maybe you should recommend the "Echoes" compilation album so they can get a cross-section of the various styles.

I agree with stratman on the echoes suggestion. My first album was WYWH, and I loved it, but he may not be the same way.

I'd say play 'em DSOTM first, and if they kinda dig it, finish the job off with Echoes. Then they can decide what era they like and explore that time period further.

DSOTM is a really good choice, but so are Obsured by Clouds, Animals, and the Wall. Meddle is very listenable, as well. Just don't try UmmaGumma or AHM.... I'd go with DSOTM for someone who hasn't listened before.

Ummagumma and AHM would scare them.

I reckon DSOTM should turn anyone onto the Floyd. Unless they hate them.

And, y'know, I just finished the first side of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and it works, too.

My first Floyd experience was The Wall, and that got me hooked... so it's either that or DSOTM

Depends on the person. This guy I used to work with at a record store didn't think mucch of Pink Floyd. He was heavily into industrial/noise music, so I played the live disc of Ummagumma and "Heart Beat, Pig Meat" at the store and he really dug them. He got into them from that. I turned this other guy on to them by making him a copy of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and the next day he, liked it so much, that he was passing me notes in class with consisting of lyrics from that album. I suppose the "average" consumer should start off with Dark Side Of The Moon or the Echoes compilation. I noticed "average" people respond to those better.
