I couldn't be arsed into reading the whole thing, but allow me to share my theories with you Simon.

I'm now going to answer for you the infamous question:
What do women want?

Answer: Women want what they can not and/or do not have....

So, the girl who's with the asshole may wish he had more qualities of the nice "guy". And the girl with nice guy will wish he was more daring, and exciting. This is why married men can so easily cheat if they like...A woman's greatest challenge (the ultimate: "I can't have this"), is to steal a married man away from his wife. Sick right? It's truth.

First let me say, that it may take a good amount of time with an asshole man to really appreciate a nice guy. She may even have to go through 2 asshole men! Yep, that's right. What is it about these asshole men that appeals so much? Well, I'll tell you the secret....
One of the most attractive qualities that a man can display is confidence. And don't asshole men seem to have tons of it? I know you've met one of those "not so physically attractive" men that seem to be pulling all the ladies. This is another advantage...a man lacking in the looks can make up for it in his personality. If he's funny, charming, and confident, then he's going to score.

So when the nice guy figures out the perfect formula...When he's able to waltz through the crowd, smiling, confident, charming, proud and with an air of mystery about him, then most likely, the lady of his dreams will be appearing sooner than later. Good Luck though, I've only met 1 that could pull it off. He was annoyed by the amount of women after him.

Oh yeah Simon I think it works the other way too. It seems all the spoilt biotches end up with the good caring guys. These feme fatals use them up to the point where they hate women. What a loss. (sigh)

I think the "Confidence" thing is right on.

Probably because subconsciously, most women want a man who she knows can "take care of her". And a man who is confident is likely to be successful.

Good point stratman, but to take that idea further, it may end up that the confident guy who gets into business (where he can further his pursuit of being an asshole to the fullest extent) and then the economy turns the way it has (at least here in the US); before long, it takes a real man to be able to stick with his wife and kids through tough economic times.

God i SOOOO identified with that article. Two sentences: I am at a college in the Midwest. I am that nice guy with a streak of not always displaying my confidence.

My wife is 27, I'm 42. We have a beautiful two year old daughter and another scheduled for January. We've been married for four years now.
Now, I'm not sure why she married me. I made a good living when we met, but I didn't own a house and I drove a '77 Chevy Luv pickup, so she sure couldn't tell by looking. I don't dress well and I am very poor at small talk - and beautiful women have always intimidated the hell out of me. We have shared interests, but many of those came along well after we met, and we explored them together.
I think she became interested in me because I was interested in her - and made sure she knew it. I spent as much time as I had showing an interest in her, but I didn't pretend to like things because she did or try to impress her with how smart or dominant I was compared to my peers. (OK, maybe a little.) I think our relationship grew out of mutual honesty and respect - and I think it gets better all the time.
I believe that confidence that PW is referring to has a lot to do with how comfortable one is with being oneself. Worked for me - Here's our wedding pic to prove it.

In my own personal experience, I have not yet met one female who was not completely crazy. If I weren't straight, I'd probably despise them.
