Question objectivism

im reading the book ATLAS SHRUGGED by ayn rand right now & i find it to be the most amazing, compelling, & motivating book ive read in a long long time. i know lots of people freak out cuz they think shes super conservative & money hungry but her philiosophies on objectivism make sense to me & are very intriguing.

any of u guys ever read any of her stuff or have some thoughts on objectivism??

Re: objectivism

I have done a cursory reading of that book in an ethics course at one point. It's been a long time, and as we didn't read the entire thing (only excerpts the professor selected), I don't really feel THAT confident discussing it...but I will say I wasn't that freaked out by her philosophies. After all, I can be rather conservative myself, in some respects.

Re: objectivism

I've never read her works, but I know I pretty much agree with her.

Re: objectivism

I still don't understand why she poured so much bad prose into what is basically a philisophical treatise rather than a novel.

Well, she's the patron saint of Libertarians like me. When I finally read it, I was spending a lot of time in motels and on airplanes, so weightiness was definitely an asset. As far as bad prose goes, well, I like John D. MacDonald, so what would I know? My theory is that, with her Hollywood background, she figured she needed plenty of sex to sell her ideas.

It's true that many people see her as glorifying greed, but that isn't what she says at all. What I think she is saying is that people should take responsibility for their own lives.

Re: objectivism

I just meant that, as she isn't very good at writing fiction narrative, and the book really is just a way to present her philosophy, why did she write a novel rather than a nonfiction book?

I think we agree here. I'm looking for my copy of it, as I believe she addressed that point, but it's buried somewhere... I seem to remember she said she wrote it as a novel because of her entertainment background and because she felt she'd reach a wider audience, but I'll have to find it to verify that.

Well I am an anal-retentive lit nerd. So it might not bother anyone else.

Hey, I'm a tech geek that reads bad novels. You can't get much more anal-retentive than that... Not that I'm in competition or anything

Re: objectivism

ya shes basically saying a man without a purpose is the highest moral sin. every man needs to work for & better himself to his fullest potential & our world could run smoother. objectivism encompasses alot of other ideas like reason - the grass is green the sky is blue (like no supernatural no gods or anything) & capitalism. no social welfare programs and such.

i think she uses the cover of a novel as a way to make it more realistic to us in a way we could better understand rather than a long ass essay on philosophy. ive never read that as the reason but i just imagine cuz it makes sense. its not the best writing ive come across but the message & the whole idea are what make it such am amazing work. u have to think about what ur reading & put things together for urself. no mystery novel ever really made me THINK. thats why i love it.

go libertarians

You are absolutely right, and I stand corrected.
