Re: Best Songwriter

Who so you think is the best songwriter of Pink Floyd?
In my opinion it's Waters 'cos the songs that Gilmour wrote are nice, but not as good as the ones of Waters or of them all together. Wright is alright, too but my fav is Waters. But still are the songs all of them have written together are the best ones

Re: Best Songwriter

I think you answered your own question

Well i also think that some of the bands best work was when they collaborated and worked together to write a song.

Roger Waters would be the ultimate in songwriting (lyrics and sound wise), if your looking at it from a solo percpective.

I'm sure Fixxlevy agrees with me

Re: Best Songwriter

I Totally Agree With you Patrick!
when the band worked TOGETHER they produced
their finest works, while when one man wrote all of the material, it never matched up to the level of the group effort.
Plus, as Gilmour's writing went down, Rogers's writing also never was the same.

So there isn't a best writer,It's a matter
of team cooporation.

Re: Best Songwriter

Hands down, Waters. Yet after leaving the Floyd, he was never able to get it together.

I know this is off-topic (sorta), but I was listening to The Madcap Laughs and something struck me, Syd's writing style is similar to that of They Might Be Giants. Anyone agree?

Re: Best Songwriter

The only song i've heard by them is "Partical Man" - great song, and Syd might have come up with something while he was
on the smoking stuff....
...but that's a different subject in it's own.

Or is it?

Re: Best Songwriter

Gilmour by far

Rog took far too much credit where she shouldnt have. For example, On the album credits, Sheep is listed as being written entirely by Waters, when in reality, Gilmour himself has said that he wrote most of the song. Gilmour also said that many times Rog would write lyrics, and a concept of a song, then Gilmour would pen the music, only to have Rog take all the credit.

But all the stuff on 'Monomentary Lapse Of Reason' and 'The Division Bell' aren't that good. This is NOT Pink Floyd, it's another band, I think. And that's not because Rog doesn't play the bass anymore. The bass wasn't important in the floyd songs. Only the guitar, keyboard and the songs itself. So if you're right, why are the songs weaker than 25 years ago? They lost is completly

Re: Best Songwriter

Why is it whenever we talk about songwriting, the Division Bell debate always seems to show up? I thought that Division Bell was a great album. I haven't listened to Momentary Lapse of Reason, so I can't comment on it. Although after a main contributor to a band leaves, it's probably difficult to get used to writing on your own. So, give him some slack for Momentary Lapse of Reason.

In my opinion, Roger was the best songwriter. It may have turned out differently if Syd didn't have his little 'problems'. He should great promise on Piper at the Gates of Dawn and if he didn't turn schizophrenic or whatever, maybe he would've been better. But I guess we'll never know.

As for my choice of Roger, he just writes better songs in my opinion. Most of my favorite stuff from Pink Floyd may have come when they were working together, but Roger was always the leading man during those periods.

So, there it is. Roger Waters all the way.

Re: Best Songwriter

And your extremely right - it all seems to come down to 'The Division Bell'.

Re: Best Songwriter

Charade, Meddle is a pretty damn good album.

Eugene, I agree with you that MLoR and Division Bell were not floyd but something totally different. While I hate Division Bell I seem to like MLoR, but still, it's not floyd

Re: Best Songwriter

Waters DOES seem to have the edge. For the Division Bell, Dave got his bird to help with the lyrics. Enough said.

Re: Best Songwriter

There is no debate ! Not only was Roger Waters the creative force behind Pink Floyd, he is also the best lyricist in the world.

Since parting from the band, he has produced 2 albums that compare well with his best Floyd material. KAOS was OK, if a little odd - made for a great concert though, did anyone else see it ?

What have David Gilmour's "Pink Floyd" done since then ?

Just compare Pulse with In The Flesh to see who desrves the respect of true Floyd fans.

Cheers !

Re: Best Songwriter

Yes, In The Flesh was a lot better than PULSE, but really they were singing songs that were already written, so you can't use that. Though I do agree that WATERS was Floyd.
