Lightbulb Response to "money is a load of rubbish"

Ok two months ago I would have agreed with the statement that was made about "money" being a load of rubbish. Don't get me wrong I love the song in every way but until I discovered some new information I didn't understand how the subject matter of money fit into the album Dark Side of the Moon. If you believe that the album synchronizes with the Wizard of Oz (WOZ) this info will be beneficial. L. Frank Baum, the writer of WOZ supposedly wrote the book based on populist point of views. Populists believed that the money standard should be based on silver instead of gold. Thus, Baum believed that gold was evil, hence the Yellow (gold) Brick Road which Dorothy must travel down and overcome all evil obstacles. If these facts are true then one can say that Money, since it comes on as Dorothy opens the door to Oz, can be a metaphor for the Yellow Brick Road and populist beliefs. This information may seem far fetched, to be honest I dont even know what to think. However, it is an interesting connection. Well thanks for reading!

Except that Rog said he'd never seen WOZ. Remind me not to get into that discussion again.

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

LuLu, you are just a bit wrong. The Emerald City was Washington and the Wizard represented the fact that the gold standard was fruitless. By the way in the book Dorothy had silver, not ruby, slippers. The Scarecrow represented farmers, the Tin Woodman represented labor, and I can't remember what the Lion represented.

Oh, none of this has anything to do with Pink Floyd music, because Dark Side, no matter how much enjoyment you get out of it, was not created with the intent of playing it alongside the Wizard of Oz.

I didnt mean to upset anyone by bringing up the Wizard of Oz thing. I dont believe it in either...it is just a strange coincidence. I was just trying to offer an interesting, yet odd connection. By the way I know that ruby slippers were silver and the lion represented William Jennings Bryan (populist presidential candidate) according to Henry Littlefield's theory on the Wizard of Oz. Also, for anyone who was interested in seeing Dark Side of the Moon played live with the Wizard of Oz, The Machine will be doing so in December in New York City. They are an awesome tribute band, I recommend any fan to attend a show.Have a great holiday everyone.

all i can say is that "money" is a classic song, i think it works in very well with the other songs considering it's really the only rocker of all the songs on the album!

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

Some time earlier in this thread, NNJ talked about the song Money in the context of:

Quote:
It's like the middle of a movie, setting up the climax and all, with the rest of side 2 being the climax slowly building

... I like this ballpark of the discussion. I can't say that I've given the metaphysical merits of The Wizard Of Oz a great deal of thought, but wouldn't be surprised that, in the same way that Roger Waters makes sense of his/our world via the lyrical concerns of DSOTM (as a whole), the author of TWOOz makes some connections to his world view via that piece of work. I mean, it's not exactly 'The Fountainhead' (or is it ?), but nothing's created in a vacuum right ? Anyhoo, if you consider Money's place in the original vinyl format, it makes a cracker of an opener to side two ("ching, ching ....") and the content dovetails nicely with the other issues explored by Waters.

What the hell does that mean? It fits because it doesn't fit?

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

It pains me to go off the discussion (as this is really the point of a thread), but in relation to Dr Cheese's jibe that he finds my expression 'hilarious', I've got to raise a question here: Do you (or GeraldTheMouse, for that matter) have anything of further interest to offer this topic ? If this was isolated, I'd wouldn't bother responding, but having read a few other threads this morning (ie: stratman's 'Eric Clapton' or youngsteinbeck8's Yes 'poll') as far as I can see, it's the same inane banter. Is this as good as you get ? At least make it funny or interesting ...
