Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

money is the first pf song I ever heard and is the reason I bought the dsotm and therefore the reason I started liking pf if that song would have never been written I probaly would have no idea right now who Pink Floyd is. the guitar solo is one of my favorites the lyrics are good and it's one of my favorite pf songs.

The guitar solo's good. The lyrics are good. The singing is terrible. It's overplayed (still!). Dave Floyd just brutalise it live.

I actually like the way Dave shouts in that song very unlike Floyd, very original for its time.

NNJ: Listen to "The Nile Song", off "More". That's four years earlier. Better shouting, too. "Ibiza Bar"'s good too, ditto "Childhood's End", "Time", etc.

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

Did Dave sing Corporal Clegg? Okay, yeah, I can see that. It must have been Syd doing the "in 1944" little bits in-between verses though unless Gilmour used to do acid too and no one told me. LOL

Anyhow... back on topic. Money is excellent on DSOTM. It's decent on COGDS. But as far as live goes... it's pretty much shit. The live versions completely destroy the edge of the blazingly rockin' guitar solo in the middle by adding a regae-esque jam session. Not my cup of tea. Actually, I believe that all DSOTM and Wall material can't be done justice without Roger, sorry Dave. Rog did the DSOTM stuff correctly on In The Flesh (although I wish Roger sang more of his own songs himself, then again Welcome to the Machine really proved that his 56 year old voice could still hit that high G). They did it back in 73 but the Floyd nowadays just make it sound like it's off MLOR -- and it doesn't work.

Anon: Actually, that's Rog. He has a terrible voice too.

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

fraid to say, dsotm is my least favourite floyd album partly cos of the whitney houston wannabees wailing throughout. At least Money dispenses with them for a moment. I thought the lyric was quite witty the first 5,000 times i heard it.

Don't go there, NNJohn. It'll make your head cave in.

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

DSOTM was the first Floyd album of that type, so it was normal to have some stuff that would sound like earlier songs. Money sounds more like earlier Floyd - and that's it! It's not such a piece of junk (but it's not my personal favourite from the album - it's Eclipse) and, as almost all people who wrote in here, i say it just 'fits in'.

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

The female vocalists on DSOTM are one of the many highlights of the album. 'Great Gig in the Sky' is definitely one of my faves. aside from SOYCD probably Wright's greatest contribution. The wailing of (claire torry? i believe) gives me chills. I think it was ve3ry bold and creative of floyd to do this and it fits very well with the overall greatness of the album.

Re: Isn't "Money" just a load of Rubbish?

right on, fixxlevy. money is a simplistic (at best) satire that fits awkwardly into dark side's theme (which is a completely different topic)... nothing to write home to mommy about.

btw, i play bass as well, and the 7/8 time signature (who was it that called it tricky?) took me a whole 3 seconds to master. personally, i won't use "shit," but from a musical perspective, "money" is definitely sub-par, especially for floyd: too progressive and avante-garde a band for this pop rant.

well, it may woo fans (young or old), but so does dave matthew's band doing "all along the watchtower" (*insert vomitting sounds here...again*)..................ryan.
