The first single, "Learning to Fly" is crafted in a very safe "Pop-Music" sort of formula. This sort of song is a major departure from Pink Floyd's previous conception album craft. I remember the video being shown on MTV back in the '80s. It was actually a great video featuring the two Native American Indian characters. I enjoyed the references and suggestions to Indian folklore by way of insinuated "Shape-Shifting" as when the younger Indian male transforms into an eagle after leaping over the mountianside. But I am left to wonder what percentage of this video concept was Pink Floyd's and what percentage was a marketing team and music video director.

The video was clearly filmed in the midwestern plains states of the U.S. Probably Nebraska if not South Dakota. The southern United States (where I was born and still live today) are coastal plains which are generally flat, grassy and at times swampy. It is rare to find beautiful, endless miles of wheat fields in the southern U.S. as shown in the "Learning to Fly" video. You'd be more likely to find an occassional corn field but typically the crops are cotton, tobacco, peanuts and soybean.

Cheers!
J.
First, Storm Thorgeson DIRECTED The Video. So that shoots your marketing theory. 2nd the video was filmed outside of Calgary, Alberta.

The wall is really great! I have it on DVD. My fav scene is when the wall is completed and it crashed through the cathedral. The detail in the drawings is awsome

Hrmmmm
Whever I hear 'Careful with that axe, Eugene' or 'One of these Days', I get the mental image of every single one of my damn ex girlfriends trying to cleave me in two while I sleep.

Am I alone here, or do I just need to take more pills.....

<--- now picture and axe instead of a hammer and it'll be 100% accurate!

No, that's what I get too. Although more pills for me wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Re: meanings of songs

as far as writing a song i was under the impression that in most cases music is written 1st then lyrics are added...

in recent Robert Plant interview about working on his 10th solo album,he gave his band some home work..."I wrote down 13 titles and gave them to each guy.No lyrics,no music.these are the names of the songs ,let's just write them."

wouldn't that be more difficult???

Post Re: meanings of songs

the songs tell the stories of the band, their friends,
and the condition of the world spiritually

beginning with Dark side of the moon
and culminating in the division bell

apply them to your life
and read the specifics of the songs to learn more about Floyd

Learn to fly
no longer allow yourself to be chained to this departed world
would you like to learn to fly
would you like to see me try

no longer are we tetheared to this meaningless existance
we have high hopes and are surrounded by friends that experience the same happiness to know that we can be free
we can tear down the wall and learn to love again

you're gonna fly high
you're never gonna die
you're gonna make it you try
they're gonna love you
