I really get into the fusion Jazz of the late 70's through the early 90's. Pat Metheny, Al DiMeola, Jaco Pastorius, Jean Luc Ponty, Earl Klugh, George Benson, Weather Report, John McGlaughlin are some of my faves.

I also get into some "angry, afroamerican" jazz too, check out Gil-Scott Herron.

The Jazzier works of Tom Waits is excellent as well, "Nighthawks at the Diner" in particular.

I like Al DeMeola, Jaco Pastorius, and Weather Report. I think older jazz is the best though. Has anyone ever heard the Miles Davis album Bitches Brew. That album trips me out.

Actually.. dear Gerry.. Grayboy Allstars are in fact Acid Jazz which is a completely new movement away from your conventional types of jazz.. but I suppose jazz nonetheless..

I'm a big fan of big band and things of the such.
The slow sort of Jazz like Kurt Elling and Diana Krall just don't tickle my fancy..

cheers

I've been drumming for like over 6 years and for probably like the last 3 the only music i work on in my lessons is jazz, which in my opinion is the hardest music to drum to. Anything else seems so easy after playing jazz. I've borrowed a lot of cd's off of my drum teacher but i only own a few jazz cds. My favorite is probably Blue Train by Coltrane, but i like a lot of jazz.

Indeed. You'll notice I never said 'They are just like Duke Ellington.'

Yes indeedio Goofball jazz is the hardest thing to drum to.. but it's damn fun.Plus it's a lot of improv on your part...

Gut. I love Jazz.

Coltrane, Pastouris and ofcourse Pat Metheny. I never really liked Miles Davis (I have Kind of Blue).

goofball: You hit it on the head with that drumming thing. I noticed it too.

Probably because so much of jazz is focused on avoiding the beat in order to emphasize it.
