SoS on the album doesn't hold up very well I believe but on Pompeii and on Ummagumma it is just sheer brilliance. SoS is my second fave Floyd song. The song is full of insanity but that is what makes it great. No other band before them (or really after them for that matter) has attempted what Pink Floyd did. Beautiful song.

No, you aren't alone.

I love Floyd, but i dislike this track. Saucerful of Secrets sounds like a bunch of chaotic noise to me but not really a track that flows or is at all enjoyable, but I've only owned Saucer for about two weeks so maybe that will change. (I only recently expanded my Early Floyd collection, for years I've had nothing but 1971-onwards)

This is the only floyd track which I can honestly say that much negative about, with the exception of Pow R. Toc H., which is too trippy for my tastes.

Actually, that's the sort of thing coming from free jazz, combined with other sources of inspiration. Anyway that was also something very refreshing for the rock/pop world. Beautiful song indeed.

Live versions are better than the studio version. On one hand there is Pompeii where it is contracted down to under 10 and i like that but I also really like the version on different live recordings, for example Live In Montreux 1971 when they played at the classical music festival (first rock & roll band to do it!), they played a version that was over 20 minutes where everything is stretched out but it also seems more calculated. Seems like after they recorded the studio version they kept developing the song and made it into something much better.

I must say the Pompeii version is tops for me but more for the visual than the musical.Roger slammin' that big Gong IS PURE ROCK.But I must say this song can be a bit tedious at times definitly not my best Floyd song.

Just because it follows a psychedelic style doesn t make it horrible. For its style it is good. You should try listening to John Cage or Karlheinz Stockhausen or Edgard Varese they are unbearable.

If anyone has heard of them, please tell me your opinion !?

aSoS from ummagumma is so great. Singing along the aaaaooooooh's at the end is always fun. especially in public.

Okay, speaking on "Saucerful" - tell me:

Does that not sound EXACTLY like parts of the studio version?

And, for the record, "Saucerful" is an amazing piece, particularly the Pompeii & Ummagumma versions.

Re: A Saucerful Of Secrets - a horrible song!

Pink floyd even admitted that this song is not all about beautiful music but more the way in which it is put together and its rhythm and changes in tempo, which, in my opinion are done very well. Great song, probably took around 6 months to grow on me but eventually i realised its greatness.
