Re: Meddle

Roger Waters and even David Gilmour use to use a finger pick when playing the bass. Guy Pratt used both a finger pick and the "slap bass method"

Re: Meddle

(laughs) I think that's a bit of Dave's ego there...I know he often...uh, handled Rog's instrument for him, but I doubt Roger ever thanked him for it

Re: Meddle

I think meddle is one of the best studio recordings of pink floyd. I can't avoid listening Echoes over and over... On the other hand, I prefer by miles live recordings like "Live at pompeii". I have never listened that strength in meddle or anything else

Re: Meddle

Regarding Percieve's messgage above, not only did Dave handle Rog's bass, Rog had someone else tune it for him, as he is totally tone-deaf.

Re: Meddle

Let us also remember that dave can't write a lyric to save his life and that though Roger isn't the greatest musician in the world he has said that he's not too terribly interested in it. I'd have to say he sure can come up w/ some good tunes though, I think some of you may agree  Being able to play an instrument well and creating music and lyrics are two diff. things and i admire waters for the latter and dave for the former but all of them most when they were working together.

Re: Meddle

Rog totally tone-deaf? How does he sing? (Listen to something like...Free Four, Goodbye Cruel World, the last verse of Hey You...he's actually nearly on-key sometimes)

Re: Meddle

Singing is different though. I can't tune my bass for beans, but when I sing... oh wait, I can't sing for beans either... anyways, singing is different.

Re: Meddle

I agree with what albatross said, and uh, no, Rog is also terrible at singing. At least that's my opinion, Dave really has him beat at that department. Of course Roger really is more of a songwriter than a performer. By the way, Rog's singing sounds great on Comfortably Numb, prob'ly because it is so bad, it fits the mood of the "doctor" character.

Re: Meddle

It's true- Roger IS tone deaf.

Actually, I thought the singing on Free four was pretty good...

Re: Meddle

Hello again, fellow Floydians:
I just bought the "Meddle" album on CD a few days ago, and having listened to it with it's digitally remastered sound proves that it's one my favorite Floyd records. In fact, and although it ranks behind "The Wall", "Wish You Were Here", or "Dark Side of the Moon" in my own perspective, it is the very first time that one realises that the band has established their signature sound and original music style. Indeed, "One of These Days" and the truly magnificent and larger than life "Echoes" tracks are two masterpieces that solidified their distinctive musical identity, serving as the basis for the following extremely successful Pink Floyd albums of the '70s. It's all there: the inventiveness, imaginative 'melodies', the growing awareness and expertise in what regards the instruments and other electronic gadgetry that was made available to them at the time, the whole atmosphere and mood expressed by the songs, etc.
The songs in between, "San Tropez", "Fearless", "A Pillow of Winds" and "Seamus" may not maesure to the depth and inspiration of the other two, but they do reveal Pink Floyd's lighter and more playful side, and also the diversity of styles that they could master.
I have one question for anyone who knows it's answer: why is it that "Seamus" is performed with a different title, "Mademoiselle Nobbs", in the "Live at Pompeii" concert, with no lyrics but with the same music and the howling dog?
Thanks in advance, and keep on enjoying the Pink Floyd's magical music.
Take care:
Pedro Medeiros

Re: Meddle

I don't really believe that Roger is tone-deaf. He can definitely hit notes when he needs to: listen to something like Pigs or Brain Damage or something. Even his solo version of Welcome To The Machine is amazing. Sometimes he just chooses to get his lyrical messages across in a different way, which isn't as appealing as the singing, but he kind of half-talks, half-sings. Good examples of this are his solo albums Radio KAOS and Amused to Death. To say he's tone-deaf is ludicrous. And I doubt that he wasn't able to tune his bass. I'm a bassist/lead singer in a band and I can say that if you're at least marginally good at your instrument, you can tune it. To get as a far as Roger's got, singing/playing/writing music, I believe he could tune his bass.

Re: Meddle

NO!
You are wrong.

Roger admitted that he had someone else tune his bass. He admits to being tone deaf. Read Nicholas Shaffner's book. It's in there.

Re: Meddle

Actually, IIRC, Schaffner's book had a quote by one of Syd's friends saying that Rick had to tune Roger's bass, because Roger was tone deaf (I'm at work right now, so I can't check).

On the original topic, I must say that Meddle is my favorite Floyd album, and has been for quite some time. Echoes is simply the greatest 23 minutes of music ever put down. And while some say that the live performances are very much the same, the longer ones from the '71 tour, just after Meddle was releases are fantastic. And I must say, despite the difference from all of the other songs in the Floyd canon, San Tropez is just lots of fun.

Re: Meddle

Rog couldn't have been tone-deaf. That's absurd. As I said, he's occasionally on key when he sings. That's impossible for someone who is tone-deaf.

I can occasionally sing well enough to drop people's jaws (I have no formal training, and it kinda comes and goes  ), but for the longest time I was terrible at tuning my guitar. Perhaps I still am (but it sounds good to me, heh)
