That would be why I've never heard it then. I've never been able to find a copy of Ummagumma in condition good enough that I've wanted to buy it over something else.

6/23/04 update: SOYCD still leads 30 to 23.

Dogs has brilliant lyrics and a couple of really funky chords and solos, but that middle section gets boring, and the studio recording has a somewhat lifeless sound quality. Roger's 2000 tour made it cool to like this one again, but I got tired of it by the end of the 2002 shows.

SOYCD is of course a marvellous first listen, but it's really hard to stay interested in the same old studio version throughout all 9 sections. The same goes for AHM but the appeal fades even more rapidly. No one's even played it on tour for 32 years.

Time is great all-around, with possibly one of the finest and most concise solos Gilmour has ever taken. But again the arrangement drags a bit and it's not nearly as good out of the context of DSotM.

Comfortably Numb... it's so hard to do this one justice. Dave's Floyd have played it ad nauseum and you just get sick of it, really. Nothing tops the studio version but even that's starting to pale in the face of so many poor live outings. Again, Roger's tour rescued it to a point but no one sings the chorus like Dave.

But Echoes. Whew. It's got soooo many clever sounds and pieces to keep you endlessly interested in the studio version, and every single live recording I've ever heard has been worthwhile (and believe me, I've heard a buttload of 'em).

It's highly adaptable and accessible, yet pushes the limits completely. The lyrics and singing are absolutely breathtaking. The overall structure works brilliantly, so do the arrangements of each individual part. And it looks like it matches up perfectly with the last 23 minutes of my favourite film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Whenever I'm bored and staring off into space, I'll find myself mentally rocking out to the jam section and picturing the Floyd at their finest in the Pompeii sunshine. Here's to Echoes, the finest achievement in a world-class canon of outstanding songs.

Damn, Botley - a GREAT review that's hard to argue with. Thanks for the input!

I, too, find the middle jam section of Echoes to be always worth a listen ('specially the Pompeii version). But there's something about the first few minutes of SOYCD ('specially the DSoT version) that can't be beat.

I respect your vote, though!
