Most musically intricate album?

This thread is exactly what the title is, what do you guys think was the Floyd's most musically complex/intricate album? (And you can list the songs that make you choose that album and such). I'm not sure what I would say as I'm not that well versed in Floyd music in comparison to everyone else here, so I'm interested in everyone's opinions.

Re: Most musically intricate album?

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is pretty intricate....at first I was thinking either Echoes or Atom Heart Mother because they have alot of changes and they are both really long but alot of it is just dubbed in audio and not really music...so I gues SOYCD gets my vote. If you are new to floyd go out and by Wish You Were Here. It's an excellent album for someone who is just getting into the music of Pink Floyd.

Animals is quite intricate, as is much of The Wall, but I'd say that SOYCD is not as intricate as you might think, yes it's a lot of lines of music, but much of it is homophonic, so it's all just layers of the same chords and what not.

Still a brilliant song though.

I'd have to go with Dark Side of the Moon. That probably has a "thicker" mix of stuff in there than any other Floyd album. One needs a few listens to figure out what's all in there.

Animals is in my opinion the most intricate. The band porrays so many emotions and feelings throughout the album that it can not be compared to anything else really. If you listen carefully Dogs conveys so many different images. And I agree with Mother that SOYCD isn't really all that complex, just long.

Re: Most musically intricate album?

About half, if not more of SOYCD is just very complex G minor chords.

He's right. Gilmour's famous intro lick is pretty much just a cleverly arpeggiated Gm6 chord.

Yeah, it really is like a slow jam session, if you ask me, just very structured.

He discovered it by accident apparently, said he was mucking about and misplayed an Am chord, and liked what he heard.

Re: Most musically intricate album?

I agree that DSOTM is the most musically intricate album. Although it is the floyd album with the most vague and weakest concept (IMO) the music seems richer with many more components of articuate rock music riffs and such but less expiremental sound effects. Not saying that these effects are bad, they are very good, but it is these effects that floyd uses to turn a musical riff thats nothing into something extrodinary. However dark side of the moon is so packed with already extrordinary tunes and riffs that it is not needed. Basically, it seems to me that DSOTM was the album where Pink Floyd had to work its hardest as rock musicians not as tinkerers of effects machines or lyrical conceptualizationists and so therefore it is the most musically fufilled/intricate album.

Lucky bugger! Whenever I misplay an Am, I don't come up with something like SOYCD!
