Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

IMO the best topic of this forum.
words.
but you can't really choose one.
I say the words, cuz you love Shine On.. and you feel the million words made by the riff because you know what the song is about! take out the lyrics and everyone feels something different. that would be Mozart not Pink Floyd.
Words are what made it PINK FLOYD!
(rogers ofcourse)

and.... we're humans with brains which help us to THINK. I prefer the kind of music that makes me THINK.
that's why it's Pink Floyd and that's why you have to listen to The Final Cut and Amused to Death tens of times even if you're not satisfied with the guitar work.

Lyrics bring sense, music brings emotion. Words AND music are what made it Pink Floyd.

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

right. exceptional combinations of words and music made it Pink Floyd.

personally I think right now weak lyrics are doing more harm to Dave's works than weak music to Roger's.

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

lets put it this way:
you have to choose one of the choices below, which one you choose?

1) great piece of music with awful lyrics
2) medium or below average music with best lyrics

why?

(we all know number 3 would be the true Pink Floyd)

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

Not to be Mr High Horsey rider here, but the original question was NOT "is Floyd music or words better?", but "what is it that sends those shivers down your spine?" and the answer to that MUST be the music...it HAS to be. At times the lyrics help to explain the music, which makes the music more emotional, but if someone sat down and read you Roger Waters lyrics without the music there won't be no shivers.

Incidently (and I'm kinda negating my own point here) the only album that pretty much totally fails in the shivers department for me is Division Bell.

Actually, i know a couple of floyd albums that fit the 2 descriptions you just gave.

Your #1 would be A Momentary Lapse of Reason
and
Your #2 would be The Final Cut

Look above if you don't know what I mean.

AMLoR=goodmusic, badlyrics
TFC=badmusic, goodlyrics

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

I would say that the music is more important--but that does not dismiss the lyrics. The reason I say this is that if you were to take away the music, you would simply be left with a poem, however impressive that poem would be. The music is the atmosphere--it is like emotions without words. It helps us to interpret the lyrics in the sense in which the band would like to convey them. The lyrics are important, of course--but witness the power of an instrumental to convey emotion...and you will see that the lyrics aren't the end-all.

Music > Lyrics ... but that doesn't mean lyrics are unimportant...not at all!

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

MUSIC sends out words into my brain...music is music and words, words are just words,GET IT! And to which, why do people say that Gilmour can't make lyrics, they are better than any lyrics TODAY by any band, but I have to say that Waters,I don't know where he got the words for sheep but that is pure
GENIUS!

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

Feenix, you raise an interesting point.

I think we have a problem when we try to compare other lyricists to Mr. Waters. It's like trying to compare a perfectly good scientist to Albert Einstein. Of COURSE that other scientist will fall short of the mark...there are some people of a calibre that only comes along once a generation or less. Mr. Waters may be one of those. Others are obviously going to look pale next to an artist of such stature, even if they are excellent in their own right. Comparing the current Floyd to the work of Mr. Waters is obviously going to fall short...but it is excellent in its own right, and still far above almost all of the radio garbage out there.

Re: Which is more important, the music or the lyrics ?

For me the music is much much more important than the lyrics. That's probaly why I'm a lot bigger gilmour fan than roger fan. The music is what makes and breaks a song for me personally. I say it's 90% music, if words do it for you more....

read a poem
