Comfortably Numb...

Hi . I was reading this thing.. some guy had posted on another website. It was talking about how David Gilmour hated drugs and drug users. Something about, his father was killed in WWII and instead of blaming Hitler , David blammed the all the people and things who CAUSED Hitler ( jews, drugs, etc. )... Is this true?

Also, I read where the song " Comfortably Numb" came from an experience David had.. something about he was unconsious during a show and a supervisor was trying to wake him up " hello is there anybody in there? " .... as for " .. that'll keep you going through the show ".. supposedly, he was pumped will medicines to make him continue.. Is this true?

Thanks for your help!

No, Roger is the one who lost his father in the War. And I've never heard of him blaming Jews and drugs (or anything else) for Hitler's rudeness.

The Dave/CN story sounds bogus to me.

BTW, welcome, BrockB.

As far as I'm aware Roger wrote all the lyrics for 'Comfortably Numb', Dave just came up with the music!

Yeah, that sounds really bogus to me. I heard that in the early days they all smoked some marijuana. Look at where they grew up -- the London Underground. And it was Rog's dad, not Dave's. The song, as quicksilver said, was lyrically written by Roger and the music was composed by Dave.

Concerning the story about Dave getting pumped with medicine during a show, it was actually Roger who was heard mentioning that. That partly is the influence for the song.

Didn't Rog kinda like Hitler? I mean, not for the fact that he murdered six million inoccent Jews but just because of his power? But then when his dad died in WWII wouldn't you hate the bugger who started it?

Also, the part about being pumped up on drugs I believe was a referrence to a few times Syd was completely unresponsive before a show and the rest of the band found out the manager, or someone else who financially gained from their performing gave him uppers to get him on stage..... course, that too could be a rumour.

By the way, I've read that RW just put the words into this music that DG had written and discarded for his previous solo album.
Is that true?
If yes, how the hell could DG discarde such a wonderful music? Maybe he really used to have drugs in that period...

He didn't "discard" it, he came up with that song while all alone in a studio in Southern France, putting the final touches on his solo album. His bass player and drummer were back in England, so he was not in a position to use it then, so he made a rough demo for future use.

And if I remember it correctly, the lyrics were "dee da, dee da, dee da dee daaaa ah" in place of "there is no pain, you are receding"

... do we still have that poll up about who's a better lyricist?

What everybody are trying to say is that this is bogus (plus you are confusing David Gilmour with Roger Waters)

If I remember correctly, Waters stated he and Nick Mason were the drink chappies, Wright and Gilmour were the druggies.
