Yea i know what you mean. I'm just saying, of the 4 Pink Floyd forums that I belong to, there are so many threads on how Radiohead compares to Pink Floyd, but IMO they are nothing like Floyd and no one can sound like Floyd.

That's simple. It's just fan hype. Personally, I could never stand the 'Radiohead is the new Pink Floyd' statement.

why compare one band to another? the only bands that sound like one that already exist are tribute bands... and it says it right in the name. bands are out to make their own music, not other peoples music

Unless you're a pop singer, in which case you just want to be rich and famous at all costs.

I hate matt/terry as much as the next guy but I'm posting in this thread again because I think everyone here should check these records out. If you've already heard them, give them another listen.

Off the top of my head, in no particular order:

1. barenaked ladies - maroon
brilliant melodies, inventive lyrics, fantastic production, almost a concept record but works on many more levels than that

2. aphex twin - selected ambient works 85-92
gorgeous proto-techno slathered in warm gooey analogue reverb... amazing soundscapes + groovy beats = quality

3. gary numan - telekon
cold, disconnected vocals and lyrics but funky rhythms and crazy synths together with more traditional instruments... a lovely blend of sounds

4. nine inch nails - the fragile
the instrumentation and orchestration on every song are absolutely mind-blowing and the vocals are stunning... a hugely rewarding listen

5. bob dylan - bringing it all back home
probably the catchiest lyrics on the face of the planet, half-electrified and half-acoustic, and still relevant now as then. say what you will about his voice, it's effective

6. led zeppelin - i
heaviest blues record evar, with touches of folk and pop for good measure, the production is simple but still floors me every time i hear it

7. simon and garfunkel - parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
clear + crisp vocal harmonies on wonderfully bouncy rhythms prop up the self-indulgent but affecting lyrics... it's a grower, folks

8. various artists - the concert for george harrison
possibly the best live recording ever devised... all centered around one of the best songwriters we've ever had

9. neil young - after the goldrush
marvellous playing, well-written and perfectly-executed songs, 5 or 6 that should count as classics by any standard

10. queen - a night at the opera
i love this album. bo-rhap is of course the main attraction, but everything around it oozes the same vibe and you just have to admire the sheer amount of craft in a record like this.

and one more

11. the who - who's next
every song is a winner, and the band were never tighter... the ultimate rock album basically

"Downward Spiral 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a must-hear if you've got a 5.1 sound system...

Totally agreed.. the genius of Eric Clapton to assemble all those people together, AND have the monty python guys bare their arses in the middle of Royal Albert Hall.. I also love that comment that Paul makes "Olivia just said to me, that with Dhani up there, it's as if George stayed young, and we all got old"

cheers

My favourite part is definitely "Wah-Wah"... I love Andy Fairweather-Low's lead vocals, even if they couldn't spare a camera angle for him! The studio version of that track is just so dense... it's amazing they assembled enough people together to approximate it live!
