10 non-Floyd albums Floydians should check out.

All my Pink Floyd chums own most of these albums, there seems to be some kind of strange relationship between these and Floyd’s albums, it’s probably just the prog element. Still, Gabriel was in Genesis as was Hackett, Gabriel worked with Bush, Gilmour discovered and financed Bush. (sounds illegal) Archive acknowledge Floyd as an influence and credit Gilmour on their album sleeve. Radiohead at least admit to liking Pink Floyd if nothing else, also Radiohead state Morricone as their main influence for O.K Computer, Floyd were doing a touch of rock opera (‘Atom,’ ‘SOS,’ ‘Careful live’) at the time Morricone was providing spaghetti westerns with operatic, rock tinged scores (‘Once upon a time in the west’ 1968, greatest score ever). Sally Oldfield worked with Steve Hackett and sang on his debut album, she also performed on her husband’s album ‘Tubular Bells.’ Well that just Leaves Camel and I’m f**cked if I know any connection, there’s a few songs on the ‘Snow Goose’ that sound similar to ‘Careful with that axe Eugene’ though.

This is the list of 10 widely available albums I feel most serious Floydians will like. You don’t have to go out and buy them, borrow them if you know people who may own copies.

Genesis – The Lamb lies down on Broadway (‘The Lamia’, a song of pure emotion. This album tells two stories, one of a schizophrenic and one subconsciously autobiographical depicting writer Gabriel’s psyche at the time)

Kate Bush – Hound’s of love (‘Hello Earth’, ‘Running up that hill’ – say no more)

Camel – Snow Goose (awesome vocal harmonies throughout, excellent piano solo near the end)

Mike Oldfield – Tubular bells (50% crap 50% utter genius – first 5 minutes used as the exorcist theme)

Radiohead – O.K. Computer (you should already own this! ‘Paranoid Android,’ ‘Exit music,’ ‘No surprises,’ ‘Lucky’ and ‘The Tourist’ just to name a few great tracks on this superb album. The album has a real atmospheric feel to it, unlike most modern albums.)

Archive – You all look the same to me (A definite cross between Pink Floyd and Radiohead. On this album there are touches of ‘Echoes’, ‘Welcome to the machine’ and Us and Them – plus the track ‘Again’ is simply out of this world.)

Steve Hackett – Voyage of the Acolyte (If you like Floyds 24 minute ‘Atom Heart Mother’ you’ll love the song on this album called ‘Shadow of the Hierophant,’)

Ennio Morricone – Fist Full of sounds (sound tracks to 3 Leone westerns – ‘Dollars,’ ‘Dollars more’ and ‘Once upon a time in the West’ with harmonica that was sampled and used on Dub foundation’s song ‘Dub be good to me.’

Peter Gabriel – Passion (Instrumental full of Gabriel’s trade mark vocal harmonies. This long album which is also the sound track to ‘The last temptation of Christ’ personifies passion tremendously.)

Genesis – Trick of the tail (A lot of people will agree this is the band at their best, Phil’s voice is the sweetest it’ll ever be and Hackett’s guitar is soaring. – ‘Mad, mad moon’ and ‘Ripples’ are something special.

If you’ve already heard some of these albums tell me what you thought of them.

The only one out of that lot that I would give any CD shelf room to these days is Radiohead. I stopped listening to Genesis and Peter Gabriel long ago, I never could get along with Mike Oldfield or Camel and as for Kate Bush? Are you having a laugh?
I've never heard of Archive so I can't comment.

Passion is an excellent album (it is also one of Rick Wright's favourites you know?) and Ennio Morricone is a great musician, he has written a number of memorable soundtracks in fact... I don't care that much for the rest of the list.

I didn't realise that about Rick Wright, thanks, you learn something new everyday.
This particuler statement shocked me when I first read it. Johhny Greenwood was asked if he liked Pink Floyd and he replied (paraphrase) 'not really, though there's two songs on Meddle which I quite like 'One of these days' and Echoes.'

I like Kate Bush, but I'm afraid to admit it because of my social conditioning.

Didn't I just see that somewhere else?

Out of those I agree about Radiohead though

I also think there should be a good dose of Dire Straits up there.

Yuck!!! I drive along with Radiohead music on but if I pass people I know, I change it to some modern POP radio station because I don't want to be ridiculed for it. I'm so pathetic.

I'll give you Mike Oldfield...nice choice here. Pure Genuis. Although I'd go for Ommadawn...(sp?..it's been awhile)

Radiohead, sure great yep...

Everything else, Bollocks! Don't get me wrong, Peter Gabriel is great, Phil, the whole gang, but...
When I'm not listening to Floyd, I'll be listening to Sabbath/Ozzy, Led Zep, The Doors, SoaD, some of the new Staind, new 3Days Grace, Chevelle's new stuff...Black Label Society!!!!!!!!!

Hell, any station that plays rock.

Not a huge fan of Genesis, something about Phil and his over the top Poppiness, as for Radiohead I just don't get it and afraid I never will!...Pearl Jam "10" should be required listening also The Beatles Revolver and Abbey Road are works that deserve repeated listenings .......

I do make fun of you, you P.Collins-loving turkey-wiener.

But since I am way too facile for this thread, I might just hum in a musically related babbling sort of way instead.

OooooooLaaaaaaa!!!
