YeS WERE really good...they really suck now. I am quite a fan of their early work (especially "Close To The Edge"), but their 80s and 90s work is utterly disappointing. Now I will admit I haven't heard all of their work from those decades, but I think I've heard enough to get a clear picture of how they became crap-ified. Now in comparison, Floyd has never released anything utterly terrible, ever (but yes, there were moments of mediocrity, however rare they were). So if it were to come down to quantity (that retains at least a smidgen of quality), then Floyd wins hands down. Now if you were to judge the two based on quality alone, then that would mean comparing their best works (for me that would be "Close To The Edge" and "Animals"). This part comes down to opinon, but I believe "Animals" is far superior.

This leads me to concur that the Floyd shall always be the kings of prog, or rock for that matter.

Aah, I think Yes got some really good albums like Fragile and Close To The Edge, but since my favorite band is Pink Floyd this was never a hard decision to make

I saw both bands back in the 70's, and Floyd were miles ahead.

Somebody already said is comparing oranges and apples, but as much as I love Yes my vote will go to Floyd.

Come on man, this is no comparison at all. Yes is a nice band but they aren't masters like the Floyd are.

I dont even see the point of putting this poll on a Pink Floyd message board. Of course youre going to get overwhelming favor of PF, thats why we're here.

Now go make this poll on a YES message board. I think the results might just be the exact opposite of what was found here. How shocking! possibly though, they might be slightly more in favor of floyd than we were for yes, or vice versa. and that, my friend, is where the true results lie

While what you say is true, I was interested in the few members' opinions as to why Yes was inferior (or better, for that matter) than Pink Floyd, other than simply "Yes is annoying".

Pretty much every single member of Yes were total masters of their instruments (though Alan White was pretty much straightforward) so if it was decided on musicianship I think Yes would win. In my opinion only David Gilmour and Syd showed a great understanding of their instrument and its capabilities (i haven't heard much of Wright just because he's usually held back on albums, but he might suprise me, but he's no Wakeman). Though i'm only impressed by Yes's 70's work, anything after Drama I refuse to listen to. I think some people don't like Yes because sometimes their technical playing and writing takes over the soul and emotion of their works, but their unique sound is still impressive from the good ol' days. Also, it's hard to crown one band as "King of Prog". Floyd would get destroyed in the Avant-garde and RIO categories, and don't fit well with the Canterbury stuff, but Floyd does deserve a high rank for their overall "prog rock-esque" innovations.

Yes (no pun intended), I agree. That was my thought when I voted, but I had a few minutes, so I decided to go into detail. Like the original poster said, he wanted some insight.

YeS is cool, but no one compares to The Floyd.

And whoever said "compare Floyd and The Doors," that's even easier...

Not to say The Doors aren't good, which they certainly are, but as I said....

Yeah absolutely, that ''Floyd vs The Doors thread'' was complete madness. Even worse than this one.

I voted floyd, because they rock But i really feel the need to stick up for Yes.

Their lyrics have been bashed in this thread, but for some reason they appeal to me. I often put Waters forward as the greatest songwriter ever - but i have a strange affection towards Yes lyrics.

But although i love floyd to high heaven, I think Yes were the masters of the Epic songs! Although echoes is truly ace, and comfortably numb makes me go wow, Heart of the Sunrise still makes me think something epic has gone on, Yours is no disgrace feels like an adventure! Starship Trooper has that fantastic buildup to the solo - something floyd (brilliant as they are) never manged to really build up that well, their best example of creating a tension, so to speak, is the into to Time.

You have to admit, Yes are masters of their art, and they specialise it wonderfully! And although floyd tip the balance for also having raw emotion in the songs, and meaningful lyrics - Yes are always, to me, the masters of the epic
