Pink Floyd vs. Yes

Apologies if this has been done before, but as a progressive rock band (or I guess just as a band in general if you really want to...) vote for whichever you think was better. And include a reason too if you'd like to, seeing as I've recently gotten into some Yes stuff and am finding it pretty cool.

Just a general comparison between the two bands would be cool...

I can listen to some Yes works, but they don't inspire or move me like Floyd does. And honestly, I find some Yessongs to be a little hard to swallow and a touch annoying. Long Distance Runaround is quite good though. Not in the same league as far
as prog rock is concerned. JMHO.

They're just not in the same league.

Yes have written a few decent tunes but I find the majority of their stuff completely unlistenable.

Floyd for me of coourse... I like Yes but sometimes I think they were trying to go too many directions at once.. elements and structure of classical music played by a rock band.... doesn't work for me all the time.

Steve Howe is an amazing player though, love his stuff, Wakeman is as odd as they come. Chris Squire is just kinda scary..

Rick Wakeman is a great pianist (please no penis jokes). I've seen him live twice. Very impressive.

I saw him live in the early '80's but I can't remember much about it now. I seem to recall he was a bit of a comedian and we had a good time but that's about it.

Floyd for me, no question. The only Yes I've liked was 90125. From what I understand that album doesn't really sound like classic Yes at all, which would explain why I like it.

I'm on your side there, russman. Although I like Steve Howe's work a lot, I enjoy the songs more that were done during the Trevor Rabin era.

My biggest turnoff to Yes is Jon Andersen's silly pretentious lyrics and his voice, which grates on me after awhile.

Yes certainly has a different mood to the music, though in my opinion I must say that I picked for Yes (stand your ground, YS8!). Compared to the musicianship of the members of Yes and the members of Pink Floyd, Yes blows Pink Floyd out of the water! Just listen to Tales From Topographic Oceans. Now if that isn't the most amazing piece of recorded music ever, I don't know what is! The closest thing I could think of that's Pink Floyd that could compare to Yes is probably WYWH first, and then DSOTM. Now don't forget that I still like Pink Floyd, it's just that Yes is a little more......musically impressing. Visually, they aren't that amazing compared to the lasers and concert films of Floyd, so both bands have their ups and downs.

I voted Oasis...

No seriously, Yes have some good tunes. I like the bass work. But I really can't stand most of their stuff.

Floyd all the way.

Si

Now give me The Doors and Floyd, well, we've got something then

Yes doesn't impress me at all. I like Close to the Edge, but in general I'm afraid I agree with Stratman's assessment of this band.

Floyd all the way. I can listen to Pink Floyd for hours, but that's impossible for Yes.
