Re: Anticipated albums.. ( Who's ready to step up? )

Has anyone else been disappointed lately? In my opinion, a lot of the bands
that were stepping up to the plate, hitting home runs and blowing away the
competition a decade ago are now becoming the ones getting outshined by
today's up-and-comers. Not that this is anything new, but does it have to
happen to so quickly to so many? So far, I've heard the latest from several
of my old favorites that I found to be uninspired letdowns. Does anyone
else agree with me? On a more positive note, has anyone heard any new
releases from your old favorite bands that were everything you hoped they'd
be? Who has a new release coming out that you have high expectations for?
Bring it...

Well, there's been a lot of talk about a new Floyd album for this year (Course, I've recently heard it's to be a "best of", but hey, if it looks good...)

What about Sting? His last album was the best since leaving The Police.

Look- I really have to mention Sigur Ros again. Their album- Aegitis Byrjun (literally- A Good Start in Icelandic)is like no other music today.

You MUST buy this album.

MUST.

Bjork... she's been around for awhile now and her work has done nothing but get better especially since she was with 'The Sugarcubes'. I consider Homogenic to be one of the greatest albums ever (after most of floyd's of course).

Iceland must be where its at... and Bjork's videos are the best i've seen... Damn M(oney)TV for not showing quality videos such as hers more often and repeating the same old shallow themed degrating garbage. ok i'm ranting.
NNJ I'll have to check out Sting's new album. i like the police but haven't really listened to his solo stuff

Among Sting Solo works, the best I know are
"The dream of the blue turtles" from 1985, "Nothing like the sun" from 1987/8, and
"Fields of gold" from 1994, which is a collection with some new songs and none album songs, as well as songs that appeared in previous albums,Spanning 1985-1994.
you might wanna check at least one of these CD's at the local CD Shop, I'm sure they'll have it.

Re: Anticipated albums.. ( Who's ready to step up? )

I agree completely. I got the latest from Depeche Mode, who are like one of
my all time favorites and there wasn't one song on there that blew me away
like anything on Violator did. Not even the single was that memorable. I
absolutely love Travis's new one, though. I think it's even better than
their last one. I sing "Sing" in my head all the time. I am really looking
forward to The Verve Pipe's new CD "Underneath" coming out. I've always liked what they'
ve done and I feel pretty confident that the new one going to be worth the
wait. I just went to http://www.thevervepipe.com for a sample of the new single
on there... so far, what I've heard sounds great, which is another reason
why I feel pretty confident that it's going to be a great CD.

That is a good point and I agree. But I think Rush is the one band who has always doen their own thing and because of that, their last album is always better than their last. They can also blow any of the newer bands out of the water. Their new album is supposed to be their heaviest ever and out by November.

Re: Anticipated albums.. ( Who's ready to step up? )

Ok- At least- before we start talking about Sting again- go to Napster(as if) or whatever you use for downloading tunes(I'm loathe to mentionany in case Metallica's SS get wind of them and apply their own distinctly pissing off version of The Final Solution), and download "Svefn-G-Englar" by Sigur Ros- and tell me if it doesn't really make you feel like You've just discovered Floyd all over again. If the answer is in the negative, I'll shut up about them.

But they're fuckin' brilliant!!!!!

Re: Anticipated albums.. ( Who's ready to step up? )

I almost feel guilty for straying from Floyd/ Waters, the most important influences on me musically, but for anyone old enough to be an aging punk rocker, go back to your Clash albums and try the new Joe Strummer and The Mescaloes.

Anyone interested in world music should try this CD. If anyone else is interested in this type of music, contact me privately.

Cheers

Simon

Re: Anticipated albums.. ( Who's ready to step up? )

Fixx, i just wrote out this long-ass reply to your post but then my explorer crashed on me so now I have to rewrite the whole damn thing--bastard Bill Gates.

I have never heard of them, and I don't use file transfers anymore since IMesh effed up my pc. But if you could send me an mp3 through aim or something, i'll give them a listen. I always think of Radiohead as a Floyd for the nineties, er whatever.

The reason I put Sting up is because I thought the Topic was old fogies who either still got it or lost it then got it back. Sting, at least with Brand New Day, fits the latter category. Where the hell did vervepipe come from?

IMesh works really well for me.Ummmm- I don't have AIM. Sorry NNJ, I'm just gonna have to recommend you take me at my word and buy the album.

What about Morpheus? Have you tried that?

Cheers,

Mark
