Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

The 3 best Gabriel Albums if you ask me are Us, So, and his 3rd album where it's his face melting on the cover. I haven't heard too much of the Gabriel/Genesis early years stuff.

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

i got Us last night pretty much just for the track "Steam." All in all, not bad. Very heavy with his "tribal" type sound, which I like.

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

I like Secret World the best off the Us album...Icarus, if you are into the "tribal sound" the Peter Gabriel album "Passion" (which is also the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ) is like 70 minutes of instrumental music with that middle eastern/tribal sound. I think it's pretty cool but it's not really for the casual PG fan. You have to really like that type of sound to handle a whole album of it with no lyrics.

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

In my opinion....

The best Genesis albums are: Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and Trick Of The Tale.

The best Gabriel albums are: 3 (melt), 4 (security) and US.

I've seen Gabriel live, and i'm a huge Genesis fans. I have all the albums. I know my shit. You can trust me.

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

I would Recommend Genesis's "Nursery Cryme" (NO Spelling Mistake, It's a game between Crime & Nursery Rhyme), "Foxtrot", "Selling England by the Pound" & "Trick of the tail".
"Wind & Wuthering" and "Trespass", are also nice additions.

let me just give the initial release years for these albums:

Trespass - 1970 (Genesis 2nd album)
Nursery Cryme - 1971
Foxtrot - 1972
Selling England By The Pound - 1973
The Lamb Lies down on Broadway - 1974
Trick of the Tail - 1976
Wind & wurthering - 1977

I believe that Nursery Cryme, Selling England by the pound and Foxtrot
are essential for anyone who wishes to get to know Gabriel era genesis.
they are all also great albums, masterpieces of music, and markpoints in history of music, in the same measure of Dark side and Wish you were here.

AS for Peter Gabriel, Here are some of my Favourite Tracks from his solo Career:

Here comes the flood
Humdrum
Intruder
Games without Frontiers
Shock The Monkey
Red Rain
Mercy Street
In your Eyes
That Voice Again
Don't give Up (with Kate Bush)
Digging in the Dirt
In the blood of Eden (with O’Connor)

Enjoy The music!

Happy new Year to everybody!

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

Nobody yet mentioned Gabriel's latest work, UP, which is a truly excellent album IMO.
Passion is another brilliant work but, as Riv pointed out, it's not for the casual listener.

I would echo most of those but my favorite cut of his solo career is Biko.. The first time I heard that cut it sent chills down my spine, and still does to this day.

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

Up & Passion are great albums, but they are for fans who have already heard all the other music. For an introduction to Gabriel it's better to stick with his more popular albums.

Re: Genesis, Peter Gabriel recommendations

funny enough, i just watched Last Temptation today again for the first time in a long while. pleasantly surprised with the soundtrack. as it were, UP is just okay in my opinion..nothing really special. The early Genesis albums really didn't do it for me, either. I still maintain my favs. of Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and OVO for PG solo.
