I don't remember it (before my time), but I may look it up.

The decade was indeed a crappy one, as a whole, but I'd like to remark that several artists delivered excellent albums in the 80s, apart from the obvious Floyd stuff: Dire Straits, Queen, Peter Gabriel, Tom Waits, a couple of numbers from U2, and various songs (as already mentioned) from REM, Rolling Stones, Cure, Bowie...

80's pop... what is it about it that is so entirely distinctive from every other decade?

I've forgotten to mention another of my favourite '80's bands - Prefab Sprout, From Langley Park To Memphis is a classic album imo.

It's kinda like Minute Rice, mashed potatos, cheap vanilla icecream and oatmeal.... It had some substance ...but no discernable flavor..

Romantic tracks by DB and GM always get me in that sensitive mood. In times such as these, no wonder. Tracks like China Girl and Let's Dance by DB, and Crying in The Shadows, Listen to Your Heartbeat and Empty Rooms by GM all seem to go over-the-edge in 80's production but yet appeal to my present situation.

1. Cars Gary Neuman
2. Abacab Genesis
3. Back in Black AC/DC

(someone mentioned PF's "Collection of Great Dance Songs":
that was one of the biggest sell-out records ever made! Why on earth did they re-record Money? To dupe fans into actually buying that pointless thing? Please! I try to forget that one.)

Sorry fellows, I can't agree with you. Knopfler was a great song writer (go and listen to Telegraph Road...) and the band were great musicians (go and listen to some of their live shows...).
And Knopfler (as a guitar player) isn't worse than Gilmour.
Don't kill me now!!!

Sorry for the "OT".

The very first rock band I ever heard was Dire Straits and the very first song I ever heard was "Telegraph Road". I was hooked.

DS are awesome. Definitely one of my top 5 bands of all time I still remember buying their live albums (On The Night I and II) from all the money I had won in a competition in school. Knopflers raspy voice, incredible guitarwork, White's (and somtimes Cumming's) beautiful drumming, the songs themselves.

I've worn those tapes thin!

And yes, I am also a big time fan of Gary's blues work. I still feel he is one of the most under rated guitarists.

EDIT:::: Incidentaly, one of my most favourite tracks from those live albums is "You And Your Friend" [On The Night - II]

I only owned "Brothers in Arms", by Dire Straits, but it was very good. They are underrated in my opinion.
