because, (like the Floyd) I never paid any attention to that CRAP.

Rather abrasive, aren't we? Over something as silly as musical tastes, not good.

My point by the way was that ABITW pt2 is nothing like DSOTM, yet you chose to link the two together.

Re: The Final Cut: an interesting outlook

TFC is a very interesting piece of music, especially its lyrics. For me most if its songs shows that an english man was really against the Falklands war (or how we call it, the Malvinas war), and against Thatcher. This album means a lot to me since that war was very devastating for us. Though it's obvious the departure of Wright, it can still be a "listenable" album. I remember when Roger came to Argentina, when he started singing some of its songs, all of us cheered his anti-war, anti-maggie and pro-peace messages... it was an incredible experience.

So sorry, I found it difficult to infer that you making any point
whatsoever...oh well, must be my "abrasiveness".

How silly of me....

I could attempt an explaination of my remark about DSotM &
ABITW 2, but I think my time would be better spent doing more
constructive things....like studying the Vietnam War.

Hmmm most folks who diss The Final Cut do it because it's not top ten radio dance crappy happy musak. While it's not my fave Floyd album, I give it the respect due to it as an album with a very profound message. Sure, musically it isn't much to rave about, but I find the stark music matches superbly the stark message.

As for J-Lo's butt... is there really two women in there?

The music, I've realized, is more than just a backdrop, like I used to think. I subtly helps the emotion of the record - it frames Not Now John perfectly, helping the anger of the track.

The best track is probably the title track, though. Can't get over those lyrics.

And Gilmour's guitar work on this record is overlooked all too often.

Re: The Final Cut: an interesting outlook

Personally, I find the end quite emotionally gripping. Those who think Rog has no music ability, as I once did, should listen to this album with a more critical ear. Sure he had Kamen's help and its not Pink Floyd as we know it, but it is damn good.

Re: The Final Cut: an interesting outlook

One of my favorite things about TFC is the use of metaphors
and ironies in the lyrics. "Tell me true, tell me why was Jesus crucified, was it for this that daddy died?"...impresses upon
me the illusion of peace. Many refer to Christ as "Prince of Peace", but more wars have been fought over religion & God
& Christianity, than any other cause. The sacrifice made by all who died in the 2nd World War was SUPPOSED to be the FINAL one. "And gathered at the cenotaph, all agreed with hand on heart to sheath the sacrificial knives." Yet mankind continues
the destructive cycle of killingand being killed over a great many petty differences. 'Her cold eyes imploring the men in their macs, for the gold in their hands and the knives in their backs." Until ultimately it comes down to the climactic and utterly final confrontation: "The rusty wire that holds the cork that keeps
the anger in... gives way, and suddenly it's day again." All that we fight for becomes a moot point in the aftermath of full scale global nuclear holocaust. "Ashes to diamonds, foe and friend,
we were ALL EQUAL, in the end."

God, I really hope for my kids' sake that it doesn't end like that.
But does Rog know something about the future that we don't?
From ABITW, part 3: "I have seen the writing on the wall..."

Re: The Final Cut: an interesting outlook

First post on this forum..happened to stumble upon it. HUGE Floyd fan as I guess all posters and lurkers here are.

On to the subject - I was not a big fan of TFC at first but I kept playing it regardless. It is a project that kinda eats at ya until you figure it out - fascinating lyrics, musically it certainly is not Dark Side but it was never meant to be that. Lyrically, Waters is at his best here. This project, for me, completes the Wall. His war metaphors are very eary. I think my fav line is "sweeheart, sweatheart, are you fast asleep? That's the only time that I can really speak to you". Magnificant stuff.

The reason I kept going back to this record even when it was not striking a chord with me (initially) was simple. Gord Downie, the lead singer of The Tragically Hip (may have to be Canadian to know that) said that a song, a great song, sounds better after 1,000 listens then after a few listens. I think TFC is like that - it seems to get deeper with every listen.

I for one have always maintained that it was a great album.

Thanks Shaners. Here's a cookie for your effort

Re: The Final Cut: an interesting outlook

I find it interesting how opinions seem to differ more on TFC than any other floyd album. I also feel that if TFC was actually a Waters solo album that the general feeling about it would be more positive. That's just my opinion.
As for comparing it to other albums, what's the point, just boils down to personal preference as usual. Just take the album for what it is, not what it 'should' be.

that's absolutely right with the final cut. i don't know how many times i had to listen to it before i get into it. tho they are very different albums, animals and the final cut are the 2 main reasons why i became a floyd fanatic.

btw, i don't think you have to be canadian to know the tragically hip. they're one of canada's greatest export.

oh...welcome here StandStillLaddy
